Here's how you can develop a strategic plan for your nonprofit organization as a leader in entrepreneurship.

We admire entrepreneurs for seeing opportunities that the rest of us don’t, and having the courage to take prudent risks that can result in handsome returns on their investments. Based on the mission, vision and values, non-profit leaders should boldly challenge the future by thinking creatively and strategically on how they realize the most powerful returns of finite resources, especially staff and volunteer time. The world continues to change at a dizzying pace, and so too should non-profits be relentlessly researching, testing and implementing new ways to carry out their missions that touch, improve and save more lives than, especially helping those who are struggling.

Conducting focus groups provides in-depth, qualitative insights through dynamic discussions with key stakeholders in our community. These sessions uncover nuanced needs, preferences, and challenges that surveys might overlook, making them an invaluable tool for gathering detailed, actionable information. By leveraging the insights gained, we were able to better understand donor preferences and successfully restructure our campaigns for greater impact.

Bring a team together to agree on the strategic plan. Brainstorm about maybe possibilities. In a brainstorming room ideas rain on the team. Agreement is important, as well as different views of ideas.

The vision is more than your organization, it's about the world you want to see. As a nonprofit, you're focused on reshaping the world to be better. What change do you desire to be a part of and see realized? An entrepreneurial spirit sees beyond the possibilities of the current reality and dreams boldly. Even unreasonably. Consider: What is your organization's role in creating this vision? Who else is involved in making this vision a reality? What are their roles, and how do they work with you? What levers need to be pulled to realize this vision? Your vision is like your why - the thing that will ground all of your work. When you are set to make decisions, you return to it as a guidepost. Make it something you want to believe in.

Rather than just describing what your organization does, it's important to frame your vision around the impact you want to make. Consider what success looks like in terms of the change you want to see in the world, and ensure that this impact is clearly communicated in your vision. I would ask a non-profit to imagine their organization five, ten, or even twenty years from now. What would they want to have achieved? The need to craft a vision that not only addresses current needs but also anticipates future challenges and opportunities, positions your nonprofit for long-term success.

From an entrepreneurial standpoint, goals should be specific and measurable, and they should also be flexible and revisited often. When setting goals during a strategic planning process, keep this in mind. While working towards a vision, things inevitably change: factors which weren't anticipated arise, the environment in which you operate changes, markets fluctuate, priorities shift. Therefore your goals need to be adaptable while still remaining true to your vision. Finally, make sure that the goals are things that every member of your organization can contribute to - from operational teams to fundraisers to program teams.

To effectively set goals for your nonprofit organization, it's crucial to align them with your overarching vision and mission. Begin by breaking down your long-term vision into smaller, actionable steps that can be measured and tracked over time. This approach not only makes the vision more attainable but also ensures that every goal contributes directly to the broader impact you seek to achieve.
