I would add another attribute that can be acquired if the safety professional does not already have a “seeing hazards” mind set. The more you become exposed to risks across a wide spectrum of circumstances—workplace, roadways, home, etc., you become more alert to identifying and addressing them. While my expertise is human behavior and roadway users, I also have a greater awareness of issues I see everyday. For example, I now “see” missing shower grips in hotels when I travel, hot water heaters exposed to flammable items, rugs unsecured and slippery, etc. Becoming a fully aware safety professional provides a rich and robust safety career.

Real-time hazard reporting is critical for addressing safety concerns. Sometimes, people notice something that seems a bit off, but they don’t know whether they need to tell anyone else about it. In addition to knowing what to report, employees must also know to whom they should report it. What is the chain of command in your company? Do floor workers report to a specific supervisor? Should they go straight to the floor manager instead? Or should issues be taken straight to the safety department? Whatever the chain of command is, carefully detail it and make sure everyone is on the same page. There should be no guesswork about who to talk to when something goes wrong.

He/she must look at worse case scenarios and second and third order effects before they happen so he/she can identify mitigations ahead of time. Risk involves factors such as for ex: 1. Human factors such as perception, overconfidence, miscommunication, misinterpretation of the working environment which may change due to weather, time of day, and others including fatigue, lack of training or experience can all contribute. 2. Time constraints. Deadlines are killers. A leader must know when it’s time to call it for the day. Or to slow an operation or process. Or when to stop to debrief a near mishap.
