Here are my suggested ways to help develop these competencies: 1. Regularly evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. 2. Embrace Lifelong Learning. 3. Develop Emotional Intelligence. 4. Cultivate a Growth Mindset. 5. Build Strong Relationships 6. Focus on Strategic Thinking. 7. Lead with Integrity and Ethics. 8. Adapt to Change and Uncertainty. 9. Foster Diversity and Inclusion. By focusing on these areas, you can develop the essential leadership competencies needed to navigate the complexities of the future effectively.

I think Resilience is the most important competency in the current uncertain and ambiguous corporate world. If you are able to withstand the uncertainty and face the volatile situation along with your trusted and competent team members, you will be seen as a strong and effective leader.

Some resources to consider: 1. Take an improv class -- Doing improv gives me immediate feedback on how present I am, positive, and how deeply I am listening to others. Skills include adaptability, creativity, being direct and emotional awareness. 2. Clear out the wreckage from the past -- Look at personal development workshops like the Hoffman Process or the Landmark Forum. 3. Select one skill that if you focused on for the next 3 to 5 years would 10x your life. Choose wisely :)

Empathy, in my opinion, is the cornerstone of great leadership. From true empathy…genuine caring…we build a foundation of trust and a depth and breadth to relationships. When our team members know and feel that we truly care about them and their wellbeing, that will permeate in all they do. People need to feel valued, respected, heard and understood. When we choose to be that leader…and that human being…for them, an honest, open and deep relationship can begin to form, becoming the solid foundation upon which we can build mighty teams.

Empathy begins with active listening—fully attending to the speaker, acknowledging their feelings, and responding thoughtfully. Research shows that leaders who actively listen better understand their team's needs, leading to more informed and empathetic decisions. Cultivating emotional intelligence (EI) is equally vital. EI, which includes self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills, equips leaders to manage their own emotions and understand those of others, fostering empathetic leadership. Creating a supportive work environment is key, as it nurtures empathy by promoting psychological safety, allowing team members to express themselves without fear. Such environments drive innovation and collaboration.

Empathy is activated most successfully when we bear in mind the outcome of empathy is to understand, not agree. Understanding gives us a strategic advantage by positioning us with critical insight, which informs the most effective communication.

There are a variety of ways to communicate including in-person, virtually, 1:1, group, email, phone, voicemail, text, etc. Be clear and succinct in your communication. When receiving communication, assume good intentions. When the written communication is not clear, have a conversation. Good communication helps to build good relationships.

Develop clear and concise messaging skills. Practice active listening. Tailor your communication style to different audiences. Master various communication channels (verbal, written, digital). Encourage open and transparent communication within your team. Provide regular, constructive feedback. Improve your public speaking skills. Learn to navigate difficult conversations. Develop your storytelling abilities to inspire and motivate. Practice nonverbal communication awareness. Implement effective meeting strategies. Foster a culture of knowledge sharing. Develop cross-cultural communication skills. Learn to communicate vision and strategy effectively. Practice empathetic communication. Regularly solicit feedback on your communication style.

To hone communication, leaders have to place people above their own agenda, which can be difficult. Leaders must demonstrate their care for people by making time for them every day. They must talk and interact with people, say hello, connect with them, and give them time and attention. You can't lead everyone the same way, and the best way to develop communication and understand people is to listen. Slow down, ask questions, and listen to learn from others to encourage their best contributions. Remove the obstacles that people face by communicating with them. Lift burdens off them that prevent them from being and doing their best by communicating. Authentic leadership isn't a title; it's a choice, supported by practices and actions.

An example that I’ve used in the past to hone my communication was a weekly email to my team leader titled “On My Radar”. It fit well because our mascot was an Aviator. It gave a status update on projects and any barriers I was facing. Also, the perfect time to ask for any assistance or resources. It was a nice way to organize the week of what had been accomplished and action steps for the next week. This allowed the leader to know how to help and feel confident in the project progress - diminishing the need for any on-the-spot inquiries.

Stay updated on emerging technologies relevant to your industry. Embrace digital transformation in your organization. Implement data-driven decision-making processes. Utilize AI and machine learning for efficiency. Adopt collaborative digital tools for team communication. Invest in cybersecurity measures. Encourage digital literacy among your team. Technology is here to stay. As leaders, we must encourage our teams to lean into it. AI and/or having the cloud do work for us feels scary to most. But done in the right way will enhance organizational and personal effectiveness. It does not have to feel impersonal. Technology is getting much better at true personalization. I am certainly not advocating for taking the human touch and the human review of technologies work out of the equation but it can do certain tasks faster and as effectively thus allowing you to leveraging the brainpower of your team to focus on more strategic analysis, oversight and innovation for better service for your customers.

I would take this a step further. With the rapid pace of technological advancement, good leaders also keep informed about advancements beyond their industry. AI is a perfect example. AI can and will play a critical role across industries. Those leaders who can find effective applications of AI within their own industries will be more competitive. If a company within a particular industry insulated itself from AI, then there is a chance that they will be out maneuvered by their competitors. Taking inspiration from technological advancements in other fields can lead to innovation within your own field. My work in AR/VR continues to help me innovate with clients and customers in a variety of sectors, not just that one.

We recently launched a series of “Lunch and Learns”. AI is our next one and I’m excited for it. With how fast technology is changing it almost impossible to stay on top of it. That’s why I have a great ITteam that I trust. We all can’t be experts on everything… so hire and surround yourself with quality SME’s.

Reward and recognize creative solutions. Encourage cross-functional collaboration. Allow time for experimentation and play. Embrace failure as a learning opportunity. Implement design thinking methodologies. Encourage diverse perspectives in problem-solving. Create spaces that inspire creativity. Use creative exercises to stimulate new ideas. Foster a culture of continuous learning. Encourage employees to pursue passion projects. Implement job rotation to spark fresh thinking. Regularly challenge assumptions and conventional wisdom.

I am proud of the fact that my undergraduate degree is in Art Studio. (Drawing, painting, and sculpture). It seemed to me that all of the other majors had answers in the back of their books, but not art. There were no answers, only new problems to be solved. The creativity and problem-solving skills that I acquired during that time have helped propel me to leadership in education, non-profit, consulting, and the corporate world. A leader who can effectively and creatively solve problems is an asset to any organization. Couple that with good communication skills and you become very valuable to your team.

In all my experience in leadership development in corporate, small businesses, nfp’s and associations I have rarely found a leader who admits to being creative! They are proud of data driven achievements (rightly so). But they see creativity as artistic. - not really grounded or practical. In truth, leaders need a future focus - a vision. And that is always found in creative thinking. If you know it’s doable it’s truly not creative enough. That’s the difference between leadership and management. The latter is about the bottom line. The former is about the horizon. What would make the biggest difference to your productivity data - that you instantly thought ‘well that won’t work’? That’s where you go. Trust yourself - train your people.

This is HUGE for me. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - you have to create a safe space for them to fail if you want your team to be creative in any capacity. If there is no space for them to fail, than they'll always be afraid to take risks.... and risk breeds creativity and collaboration! You are their leader, and in-turn their foundation to be successful. YOU set the tone and the pace.

As a teacher and performer of improv I use the creativity of this art form daily. For two decades now I have coached executive teams on positivity, teamwork, and simply having creative fun… all while using improv games.

Always be hungry to learn and add value to yourself and your ecosystem. Ask yourself - What new experiences am I actively engaging in? - What failures have I learnt from recently? - How am I giving back and sharing my knowledge and experiences? Even the sharpest knife needs to be sharpened from time to time … make sure you sharpen yourself to keep your edge!

Somebody at the start of their career told me they wanted to get ahead but didn’t have time for self development. I knew they wouldn’t be a leader. All leaders I know have invested in themselves to develop their careers. I was the youngest senior leader in my organisation and it was because I took charge of my own development. While also making the most of anything my org had to offer.

By being the “CEO of your career,” you take charge by actively setting goals, seeking growth opportunities, and developing skills that align with your values and aspirations. This proactive approach allows you to seize new opportunities, and find fulfillment in your work. To stay motivated and engaged, prioritize development activities. Informal learning opportunities are easy to fit into your day- make time by integrating it into the flow of work by regularly reflecting on your experiences. After projects, evaluate what worked and what didn’t, and identify areas for improvement. Allocate time as you can for self directed and formal learning. These practices ensure continuous growth and help you stay motivated in your career journey.
