There are different types of data requirements and structures are created accordingly. It is very important you have a very strong knowledge of the requirement and I always say this, visualise the requirement 360 degrees, take care of the future requirement, some even when there is no requirement at the moment. Ensure there is no redundant data structures, maximum try and keep data in single source.

Just for inspiration: "needs" also include "restrictions"/"constraints"/"obligations" your architecture needs to comply with (some of the colleagues here included it implicitly in their answers). However, to make things explicit, consider the following question in your information system architectures: "may we use this (data/information)" and "for how long" and "how do we ensure that it is not used anymore after" and answer it both for non-synthetic and synthetic data/information. The type and number of data sources as well as the users of that data are growing for the past decades. This trend might continue for a while and for that reason it is critical to understand the current needs but more importantly assess the future needs - this will not be easy but we will have to design our system in such a way that it is distributed, scalable, and extensible.

I recommend choosing an ecosystem (EaaS) like Microsoft, Amazon or Google and then sticking to this as far as possible. The gains greatly outweigh the drawbacks when integrations become a lot easier and data is more readily available.

Best practices are often learned from others. In that context, it is essential to understand them properly to apply them, as this knowledge is not generated personally. However, it is also important to maintain a discovery-oriented attitude to find new best practices on our own, as each use case may have particularities that require such an attitude and willingness to innovate.
