1.) Understand different index types, their structures, and use cases. Indexing quickens whatever data retrieval you have, but improper indexing can negatively impact write performance (loops). 2.) When it comes to database engineering; only normalize data to reduce redundancy, but selectively denormalize to optimize read-heavy OR multi-queries where speed is crucial. 3.) Familiarize yourself with query execution plans to identify bottlenecks and adjust queries accordingly, especially when it comes to optimizing joins, indexing choices (see 1), and subquery usage.
