Here's how you can cultivate your own leadership presence and influence as a vocal coach.

Know your role, be prepared, structure your sessions, set expectations and communicate clearly about the same. Be knowledgeable about your material, do the extra work to know the tiniest details of every aspect you are going to deal with, not just conducting the rehearsals but also scheduling, communication and anything else that might be involved with the entire process. Invest in your choristers, help them identity their strengths and push them to get better by the day. Help them understand that the joy of music surpasses any other in most cases.

This is crucial to create a safe and supportive environment for the client, which means they will feel comfortable experimenting and even making mistakes, which in turn leads to faster progress! Trust builds their confidence, encourages open communication, and generally brings clients back in the future. It's all about creating a non-judgment space where they can use tailored feedback to help them progress.

Building trust sometimes can be tasking when singers doubt your abilities as a coach. But with time when there's team work and understanding, relentlessly improving your coaching skills you'll be able to create a strong bong with your singers as they gradually see growth in their performances.

I agree in all of the above. In simplistic terms regarding respect with any human - we need to teach other humans how we want to be treated. If we know what sort of behaviour we will tolerate and if our values are crystal clear, then people will respect you for standing your ground and respecting yourself and your own needs. Respect starts with self. For example - if you always go over time, or always turn up late It shows you disrespect your own time and the time of others as well. By knowing your own value and living by strong, clearly defined standards you will create more respect from others naturally. There is no need to “command” it. Don’t expect it - earn it ! ????

Vocal coaches work with people from all walks of life, and all ages and abilities. Clear communication helps accommodate diverse learning styles and reduces misunderstandings, making the coaching process more effective! I used visual aids, accessible language, show examples and always check they understand before we move on. This is how we can meet the needs of everyone and create an inclusive environment:)

Clear communication is key to building a successful and vibrant voice coaching studio. A confused mind will always say no. This is something I have learned a long time ago in my business. If you are not super clear in the value that you provide - the student will either not learn with you at all, or not do work required to make progress. By keeping your communication clear, but tailored to the learning style of the student , then they will be more likely to be self motivated and progress faster which means you will be more successful in the long run too. Happy clients leave great reviews ! Be clear. Give clear guidance. Support them in between sessions. Let them know both verbally and in written form how to reach their goals.

This is true for technique but often overlooked for vocal care. My role in vocal rehabilitation for professional singers has shown me that people often have no idea of the day-to-day things that support a career in singing: warm-ups, cool-downs, self-care, managing vocal load etc. These all need to be a way of life and demonstrating them benefits the teacher and student. Having said that, I have no time for the guru mentality. To give freedom to a voice requires the singer to make choices- How do they want to style that phrase? Which sound to they prefer? Why is their character saying this? A good teacher gives students the technical prowess and musical understanding to make their own decisions, freeing their expression and individuality.

People will follow a leader who is going where they want to go. Joy, strength, and skill are all assets to this. It helps however to specifically lead the student according to the relationship. Otherwise, the teaching won't land squarely where it needs to land.

You don't know what you need to model for your students until you get to know them. At my first school, it was passion and professionalism. Students needed to see me be well-planned and disciplined and I consistently had to hold them accountable for their learning. At my last school, it was self-care: Making sure to eat healthy foods, drink enough water, and get enough sleep even as you strive for excellence. That meant I had to set firm boundaries about when to arrive and when to leave, when to start and end rehearsals and lessons, and making time for myself during the work day to be healthy. You can't pour from an empty cup and you can't sing as well when you're sick, so self-care is instrument care for our voices.

A student was embarrassed to try out singing, but when I gave her some fun exercises that got her singing in spite of herself, I was able to affirm the beauty and goodness in what she was doing. This lead her to join the choir I directed. This celebration of achievement encourages people to follow a leader wherever that leader goes.

Often I will instruct my choir students to check the music of their neighbor and collaborate in singing exercises to strengthen blend. Letting students interact with others helps us all get over individual insecurities, and discover more of what we can do together.

Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Public ones at that. I have perfect pitch within 1/2 a note. When stressed, I still can sing notes as blue as the sky. And I have published some of these songs, on Smule, Starmaker and YouTube. Because that is part of my process to improve - owning up to my mistakes.

Everyone is a unique instrument. You are the only living, breathing , Thinking, Emotional, and vulnerable instrument of it's kind! Take great care of it and be patient in your learning of your instrument. The brain and the body learn at different speeds.
