Find out the name of their spouse, learn what sports their kids are in and then ask them more substantive questions about those topic to build a meaningful and genuine connection. Periodically send them an IM about something funny you heard, talk about the big game last night, etc. Find ways to interact with them as a person and not an employee. The genuine connections are what improve morale and help retain top talent.
