Developing a strategic mindset is vital not only for the organizational success but also for the individual's success. The question is, how can one develop a strategic mindset at a personal level? I have a solution that you can consider. 1. Become curious about your gifts, passion, and values( GPV). 2. Keep the organizational Objective Key Result (OKRs) for reference. 3. Then, become curious again to explore how you can leverage your GPV in #1 to achieve the OKRs in #2. Once the individual gets the linkage, he can also utilize curiosity in his projects or daily execution to be more creative and more innovative. Therefore, curiosity is vital for an individual to contribute to an organization's success.

Expand your knowledge beyond your immediate expertise by exploring adjacent fields and industries. By understanding how different disciplines intersect, you can uncover innovative solutions and anticipate emerging trends that may impact your organization's strategy.

Effective ways to cultivate a strategic mindset include: 1. Think holistically - don't be constrained by existing boundaries 2. Think dynamically - our environment is continually changing, so design strategy to be effective for the future, not just today 3. Involve others - involvement in strategic planning increases buy-in for strategic execution 4. Differentiate - great strategy gives you sustainable competitive advantage 5. Focus - strategy involves focus and making choices/prioritisation 6. Simplify - refine your thoughts to be as simple and succinct as possible while still containing their full meaning 7. Plan your actions - the only strategy that counts is the strategy you execute 8. Evolve - allow space for emergent strategy

With those top three in mind, make decisions on hiring, positioning, delegation, oversight, and systems to measure progress. Be okay with making changes, even the difficult ones that may require termination or re-alignment. When the office culture (i.e., caring about people, their well-being, and relationships) is nurtured, the culture will then work diligently to meet productivity deadlines and revenue goals.

On a very basic level, define where your company is today, and then articulate where you want the company to be in specific period of time in the future. The value proposition is being able to communicate the path and for all associated employee to understand the direction leadership wants the organization to be headed. Then, you can build milestones, metrics, and assessments to determine if you're on pace to reach your intended goals. Two critical points: 1) If you can't define the destination, then you cannot communicate the plan, 2) A plan provides the framework for accountability. This clarity unifies the team and provides direction. With both in place, the likelihood of success dramatically increases.

Implement agile principles in your strategic planning process to enable rapid iteration and adaptation to changing market conditions. By fostering a culture of experimentation and learning from failure, you empower your team to respond effectively to evolving challenges and seize emerging opportunities.

I actively encourage leaders to swim upstream (upskilling) and outside of their swim lane (cross-team collaboration) to learn and grow in their careers. Stretch assignments are another great avenue for increased collaboration to deep knowledge and be a top collaborator. Ability to think strategically is a characteristic, not something that could be easily learned or come naturally for anyone in any given situation. Relaying on and including team members that are gifted in this way is a paramount when laying out organizational goals. And then including those that are naturally great at implementing strategies.

In a world that moves so fast, a solution that worked yesterday is no longer relevant today. A strategic leader with a strategic response to yesterday's problems can cease to be strategic in today's challenges. I must admit learning this first hand...as a young professional, designing a program for my client meant asking questions, a lot of research, lateral thinking and solutions - but the same approach does not work today. It does not work because client needs and realities have changed. The same problem demands a novel approach and new solutions. Strategic thinking enables a dispassionate approach to letting go of your ideas that worked, seeking feedback on what worked and then redesigning... all with increasing frequency.

Establish clear metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure success. Regularly review and evaluate the effectiveness of strategic initiatives. Identify areas for improvement and adjust strategies accordingly. Encourage data-driven decision-making and continuous performance monitoring.

Leverage data analytics and market research to inform strategic decisions. Continuously scan the horizon for emerging opportunities and potential threats.

In my experience, getting out of your industry is essential when it comes to staying informed and thinking strategically. For example, every month, read a magazine or a few articles from an adjacent or even completely unrelated field of work. Look for connections or metaphors across industries to prime your mind to see trends. Look for peer groups with peers not only in a similar role and industry, but for those at a similar level, but different functions or fields. You'll likely find you have much in common, and you'll start seeing the connection between functions and larger trends. Encourage your team to bring one new thing they learned to each team meeting. Discuss themes they've noticed, and grow their strategic thinking, as well.

Having an effective feedback loop is an important part of unlocking organizational success. Many companies suffer from "shinny object" syndrome and jump from one new strategic imperative to another. This creates fatigue among leadership and staff and also fails to circle back to understand if strategic decisions made were actually effective.

This is the area where you can involve your team members. Invite them to help with research, attend workshops and events, read on the latest in the industry... Different people look at information differently, and having multiple eyes and ears on latest development offers a unique sum of information, which will help with making better strategic decisions!

First and foremost is start thinking beyond yourself and at a project/ group level. Empathy is your ability to truly understand the "human data" set that your people offer. Without understanding your teams, how will you ever know if your strategic direction will achieve the impact you require?

High performers want to know what is expected of them. Not having a plan is accepting chaos. Chaos is the consequence for failing to communicate a vision and defining a destination. If the fastest way between two points is a straight line, then you'd better be able to communicate where you are and where you are trying to go. Imagine inviting 100+ people to an event where they will receive a lump sum equivalent to their annual salary. Then imagine that you failed to provide the date or location to the event. How many people will email questions? How many phone calls will you need to return? How much frustration and confusion have you created by failing to communicate the plan? Ultimately, how many people will make it to the event?

Align strategic initiatives with organizational culture and values. Involve employees in the strategic planning process to foster buy-in and commitment. Communicate the strategic vision and goals clearly to all stakeholders. Develop contingency plans and risk mitigation strategies for potential challenges. Continuously refine and adapt your strategic approach based on lessons learned.

I find two of the most critical elements for a strategic mind is to be obsessed about the future and to be truly open to ideas. Strategic leaders literally live in the future. They consciously excuse themselves from operational conversations of today or spend time on the past. They proactively seek input on trends, ideas for innovation, and love the 'what if' conversations!
