Here's how you can cultivate leadership skills through internships.

Networking is indeed crucial for career growth. During my internship, I made a point to connect with as many professionals as possible, which opened doors to invaluable guidance and opportunities. Building relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and fellow interns enriched my experience and provided insights into effective leadership. Attending professional events and participating actively were game-changers for me. Asking questions and showing genuine interest helped me form lasting connections.

I learned at an early age that people make assumptions and perceptions about you without getting to know you. They will put limitations on you based on their failures and limitations. They will discourage you from taking risks that they would not take. I was judged on my gender, my age, or other attribute. People have tried to put me in a box, but I routinely found my way out. I come from a long line of stubbornness from my Italian/Spanish/Ukrainian roots. I am a fighter, and I sometimes take the hard way over the easy way, but I see it through. I recognized that I was not afraid to fight. A great realization I had recently, I can choose when to fight and when fighting is not constructive. This helps me stay true to my values.

Build relationships,network & active participation is a critical aspect for an intern. Involvement,connecting to professionals for guidance,career development & taking insights is the way ahead during internships. Such connections & networks will mentor interns & they can learn from their experiences. Attend groups discussions,webinars,events to enhance knowledge from the learned fraternity.

Engage with your supervisor and colleagues, expressing your desire to learn and contribute meaningfully to the team. Pursuing challenges is critical for growth. Volunteer for complex projects or tasks that demand collaboration, problem-solving, and decision-making. Embrace leadership responsibilities whenever possible, even if they seem daunting, as these experiences are instrumental in refining your skills. Furthermore, invest time in developing relationships with mentors or role models.

In order to grow, embrace discomfort of exposing yourself with doing tasks and taking actions that you have never done before. In doing so, don’t be afraid to bring your own initiative to the table and also ask for help. Be (pro)active! Try new things out! Welcome challenges and create them for yourself! Be curious about who you are becoming through the discomfort of risk-taking!

Observing leaders is indeed an invaluable learning experience. During my own internships, I paid close attention to how leaders communicated and made decisions. This taught me a lot about effective leadership. I found that the best leaders inspired their teams and made thoughtful decisions. Asking for feedback was also crucial in understanding my strengths and areas for improvement.

The best way to gain knowledge if from practical experience Observing leaders on how they communicate,project,inspire & motivate team,resolve problems & make decisions. Notice all the qualities that make the leader effective & see how you can apply the same to your situations.

Know who you wish to learn from! Observe them and notice where they inspire you. Whatever quality or action inspires you, know that you’ve got it within you or else you wouldn’t be able to spot it! Notice also what has a different impact on you - behaviours you would never wish to demonstrate yourself. We always learn from observing other leaders - whether about who we wish or don’t wish to become!

Your own leadership framework is based on the good, the bad and the ugly leadership styles that we have been exposed too. The ability to filter from our experiences those attributes that will truly make us a servant leader enhances our success and the success of others.

Leadership is defined by having an initiative much more than by having a position! Position might give you the decision-making power but the initiative that you are really passionate about, that you wish to turn into your contribution, will pull you into finding ways how to influence even when you don’t hold a position of power. Never underestimate the power of initiative!

Being honest in your reflection is extremely important. Seeking input from others in an open and honest way as we reflect may assist in actually defining who we are in the reflection process. A 360 self assessment from a reputable vendor is also helpful in gaining personal insight.

Understand how the company you are interning with has built their systems and processes. As an intern you get hands-on experience in understanding the business model and the systems and processes which are like the nervous system of the company. Understanding how a company sets up their efficient systems to run the everyday affairs of the company is a valuable takeaway for any intern who is paying attention to detail.
