Team members could experiment with new technologies, propose radical solutions to industry-wide challenges, or even build prototypes that may not align directly with current product lines. Such an initiative not only injects freshness into the team's routine but also highlights the organization's commitment to innovation, ultimately cultivating a stronger, more creative engineering culture

We should encourage people to take more risks and to accept that setbacks are part and parcel of the innovation process. Firstly, the environment needs to be conducive for people to speak up, brainstorm openly and to discuss what-ifs. It is important for people to be able to share their ideas openly so that we can collect as many insights from the team without judgement. You can create projects for the team and provide them with resources to show your support. But what is also important is to gauge the extent of the risks taken and their possible consequences. Conduct check-ins and decision gates to evaluate the progress of their experiments. When a project concludes, it is good to conduct a feedback session as a learning opportunity.

From my perspective, in order to deepen collaboration, one would need to build and enhance relationships within the team and with others. For instance, consider team building events or knowledge sharing sessions with the team, preferably in a more relaxed setting. Allow people to share ideas freely and to learn from one another. I think it's true that everyone has different strengths and if we can harness all of that, this can be very powerful to drive innovation. But collaboration should not be limited to within the team. Consider bringing in external perspectives whether that is from other departments or your industry peers. You may actually gain new insights and this also encourages outside the box thinking.

Experiment with different work models to find what best enhances creativity for your team. For instance, alternating between remote and in-office days can provide a balance between solitary focus and collaborative energy. Engage the team in deciding these schedules to ensure they align with personal productivity peaks and encourage ownership of both schedule and output.

What is essential is to continuously motivate people to drive the behaviours needed in order to build the innovative culture in the team.
