Here's how you can cultivate a growth mindset to learn from failure in your manufacturing career.

First Seperate Product, Process and Person from the "Failure." Do not blame a person, you don't know the unknown. Then learn what went wrong in the Product and the Process so you can better teach the Person. Look at failure as a learning oppourtunity. What went wrong? What can we do better? Not pointing the finger to blame someone.

Manufacturing companies love to make plans, based on hitting targets at a home run hit rate. But no one hits home runs every time. Professional baseball players only hit the ball less than 40% of the time. Home runs are even more rare. I only remember one project in my career where the organization performed a lessons learned with the entire team. Regular lessons learned would indicate home run performance isn’t possible. I take one day a year to perform lessons learned with my team for 20 years now. We use the Start, Stop, and Continue technique to identify mistakes and strengths to correct and improve the team performance, but organizations don’t perform them regularly. Why? They don’t want to know their weaknesses.

What is the goal, not too many at once, too much too fast can cause people to work against each other, one step team approach so everyone can see the benefits as they are acheived... Better Safety, Better Quality, Faster Throughput, Less Cost... these goals are very hard to acheive all at once, but better safety and better quality can lead to faster throughput and less cost.

Safe, place to learn, safe place to learn, safe place to learn. Then can you construct simple Design of Experiments (D.O.E.) based on what you learn? Can you then apply the best results of the D.O.E. to the live process. People are very much if it ain't broke don't fix it with the live process, but if you can find a small tweak that improves quality without compromising safety or improves throughput with reducing overall performance, then that is the win-win!
