One thing that will help, is if you approach your day-to-day with a learner mindset. Once you believe you’ve got it all figured out you’re no longer adaptable. Another thing that is helpful is getting rid of your assumptions about the way things are supposed to be. This is when leaders get into trouble, when they have a picture of the way they think things should be instead of just letting things be The way they are. One thing I have found helpful as a leader is to accept change as part of the deal, as part of life, as part of being human. People change, situations change. I go to work expecting my day to be disrupted and practice staying calm in the midst of the moving parts. Why do you think the days are always changing, seconds to minutes, hours, then days. Nothing is static. One time the earth was said to be round, then flat, then geoid in shape. We are told by scientist that the earth itself rotates around its own axis 15° per hour and orbits the sun at 0.985° per day. We become better leaders and are able to create safe spaces around us when we are malleable. Our teams become less edgy, more creative and able to take emergent actions.

The business world is ever-changing, so leaders should always anticipate change, avoiding a fixed mindset or being too attached. When you can manage your attachments to a perfectly executed strategy, idea, team, system, or process, it becomes easier to embrace change with an open mind. Be transparent with your team when your gut says it's time to ride the wave of change. Recognize that it will be uncomfortable and frustrating; this awareness makes it easier to let go of attachments. Our brain is subject to many unconscious biases. It may seem, that we are therefore inherently unsuited to assess risk correctly and make good decisions. However, if we make ourselves familiar with the ways our brain assesses and validates incoming sensual information, it becomes easier to know when to be extra critical of our own perception and when to simply trust our 'gut'.

Creativity needs psychological safety as well as opportunity. As a leader, I can try to work towards furthering psychological safety in my team, for example, by creating a safe space for constructive conflict and personal risk taking, in which people are more willing to contribute ideas and take on projects, which have a potential for failure - which is true, as a rule, for almost any project that incorporates an opportunity for real innovation.

People are generally happy to help in business, and what you are experiencing, others have faced before. They may offer not just advice but also resources, tools, and connections to the right people. This support can prevent you from reinventing the wheel and help you mitigate challenges more quickly. Build and maintain strong professional relationships, seeking insights and support from a diverse range of contacts. Collaborate with other leaders and organizations to share knowledge and strategies. And as leaders, always pay it forward!

In my experience, I have found the statement, "your network is your networth" true in every sense. While clearing out the desk of my predecessor about 23 years ago, I found the brochure and membership form of a Professional Association. I went on to sign up. Leveraging that association and a few others I deliberately joined, changed the trajectory of my career. Taking on leadership responsibilities and investing time and effort in building diverse network that includes professionals across industries, functions, age-bands and geographies has helped me to navigate many challenges as a leader. When COVID-19 struck, a few of my peers sent me pandemic toolkits that we could implement at my firm while I was still stranded in the UK.
