Here's how you can create a winning team building strategy.

Train and retrain. Sure, needs of individuals vary. But a team is only as strong as its weakest link, so a training schedule must be introduced and followed. The most effective leaders will keep up with this, but yet involve surprises to keep things from getting monotonous. Teach urgency, and focus on shared goals in a way that all feel ownership and responsibility. We all must be driven and be absolutely obsessed with the same vision.

As they say "Before attempting to solve a problem, first, make sure there is one". Engage with the team collectively and individually to assess their appreciation of the current status. Give time to attached biases. Analyse the understanding and compare with the desired goals. Then you will have a structure to base your team building activities around. There is "no one cure fits all" possible. However, there must be a few activities that the entire team undergoes as one.

A good start point to balance a session is to collect info about the team members imdividually before they meet by asking a few key questions to ascertain their thinking styles and communication preferences.

Once the objectives are set and communicated, the next step is to design and implement activities that directly support these goals. Choose activities that are engaging, inclusive, and tailored to address the specific areas identified in your assessment. Regularly monitor progress and gather feedback from your team to ensure the activities are effective and enjoyable. Adjust your strategy as needed to keep it aligned with both team needs and organizational goals. To develop objectives, you first have to alleviate the pain within both individuals and teams. Once you achieve that then you can start setting goals and a path towards those goals,

Understanding the role of the team is vital to selecting the team building exercise. Those in a Call Center would benefit from an situation where multiple things are going on at once, and they try to complete a given task. Another would be where they have to complete a task blindfolded as someone gives them directions. This is done as each team is broken down into smaller groups which then compete with each other. All this is reinforced by the standard goals that are inplace for the organization.

I run several smaller teams where we generally are working daily problem solving and trust exercises on a daily basis as part of the general work cycle. The one thing that I highly encourage is communication and collaboration. Generally I find that people want to be seen and heard, even if you don't go the direction they offered they want to feel like they have contributed in a meaningful way. When you surround yourself with smart people there contributions are generally going to be very valuable to the project

On top of weekly progress downloads for current projects, one thing I have found helpful is to do One on One meeting with each member of my team. I like to do this quarterly but could be more often if time allows. Rather than focus on ongoing projects the focus is on the individuals progress towards goal or development.

Build evaluation into the processes that your team executes, so that you iteratively review and assess over time. This creates an opportunity for a higher level of engagement within the team, sets a tone that encourages feedback, and helps to adjust direction in smaller increments. I think that if I continually have activities for teambuilding. Also, for continuing education and in their field will keep my team feeling that they’re moving forward and learning. Teamwork comes by practicing teamwork, not just talking about it. No matter if you’re a new employee or longtime employee we always want to move forward in our knowledge of whatever, our industry is.

Don’t order! Don’t act like a dictator, share the load and manage from inside, be part and one with the team and always foster a learning culture and a constant improvement mindset.

Recruit a team that completes your weaknesses and empower them to do the job they've been employed to do. If you lead from the front, your team will follow.

Without a real documented approach for how the team performs their roles it is difficult to train, evaluate, or improve. It also can create knowledge gaps as your team grows. Before you get too far into who is on the team, be really specific about the roles, functions, interactions and expectations of each member. This creates a stronger onboarding experience, empowers a team leader to hold the team accountable to outcomes, and creates an environment for each individual to do their best work. A lot of us have had a job where it felt like half of what was expected was never trained on, or mentioned in the job description. Be a leader that bucks that trend for someone else, and set each person up for success!
