Creating a vision for your business starts with your big "why." What's the passion that fuels you? Imagine how your business will change the world or your corner of it. Articulate this vision in bold, clear terms- think big, even if it feels a bit audacious! Then, carve out tangible goals that serve as stepping stones toward this grand vision. Make them SMART, but make them daring too. Regularly revisit and tweak these goals to stay dynamic and responsive to the market and your own entrepreneurial spirit. This is your roadmap, not just a checklist. Let it evolve as you do, and let it remind you why you started this journey in the first place.

Begin with the end in mind! Determine what the organization's impact will be and what its legacy will be. Using this as your starting point, determine the major milestones along the way. Set goals to pursue those milestones, and be prepared to make adjustments as the environment changes around you.

If you are super task-oriented, you have to first understand where you are going in order to know you are accomplishing the correct tasks along the way. The first step is determining your "why". The why drives everything, motivation, drive, skill set, and most importantly if there is a need for it. Secondly, determine if you have the skills to get there. If you do not, evaluate skilling up or partnering with someone who is an expert in this area. Lastly, put in place a plan. If you don't have a plan, you are planning to fail. Incorporate your values and what is important to you so that it holds you accountable along the way. I have found these steps to be tried and true!

A true entrepreneur develops (not set) a clear VISION, and stays fluid to allow their vision to manifest. The truth is, in entrepreneurship, things change all the time. Hence goals and KPIs have to change too. Throw away the traditional practice of coming up with 5 years plan; instead plan for 1 year and be prepared to adapt and pivot frequently. Eg. You may plan to get 1 million in investment, instead you get 250,000. You start by making the best out of that and not wait for it to become 1 million. It’s through this entrepreneurial mindset and unrelenting pursue that ultimately enable you to achieve your vision. People buy in to your vision and YOU; not goals, KPIs or action plans. Defining strategy comes before setting goals. Strategy determines how you execute against vision, goals are measures of how quickly and effectively you execute. Strategy needs to consider multiple time horizons - short, medium and long term all matter, and when pivoting from strategies to goals, targets need to align with short, medium and long term aspects of strategy.

Focusing on the critical few KPI’s starts with understanding what can improve act strategy positively or negatively. KPI’s support replanning as well as accountability, replanning in the sense that an organization learns from successes as well as failures, and accountabilities because analysis of results ties directly to validating contributions of individuals.

I always see the KPIs as a must have in any project. If you’re not measuring, you’re not managing. I like to use NPS and the Linderman measurements in my communications projects. Using both tools gives the project different perspectives, one for the client point of view and the other for the individual.
