Here's how you can create a lasting philanthropic legacy as a late career professional.

Ask where you and your family are already engaged. Ask how you might deepen that commitment as a volunteer, board leader, or as a professional who could lend expertise in areas like finance, technology, or fundraising. Review your giving plan and see if fewer, larger, ore focused giving might be in order. See if you can spread the word to other’s at your age and stage.

To create a lasting philanthropic legacy, start by focusing on what personally resonates with you. Take your passion and identify key efforts that can truly make an impact. Focus on building long term supporters who are compelled to make a meaningful and fulfilling contributions. Engage with personal connections to help amplify your impact and grow a community of support. Creating this strong foundation is the key to driving change.

Rely on data. Once you have selected at least three social causes that you are passionate about, conduct thorough research. Consider these basic questions to guide you: - What resources, both financial and non-financial, are necessary? Listen to the communities. - Where would they have the greatest impact? Use socio-economic indicators. - Which stakeholders are already involved in this issue? Build alliances and multiply the results.

I have been a philanthropist since I was young, focusing on causes from social justice and animal welfare to arts and the environment. I donated a major gift to an arts institution when I was in my 50's and still had money. I do not have those resources now financially, but I have a wealth of experience I am trying to pass along, including writing successful grants addressing development, peace, and health issues in Africa, and a community garden in my own community. I am committed to animal rescue and am actively sharing daily, in addition to helping to create a network to carry forward this work. I am re-engaged with a nonprofit I helped to start in Kenya 20 years ago, looking and applying for grants to serve a challenged population.

Definitely start with a list of causes that have been important to you. It doesn’t have to be long - in fact I would shorten it to your top 3. Now, list the skills you have accumulated through your career. What are you good at, and how have you had a lasting impact? Then, start drawing lines and connecting the dots. The sweet spot is where your skill sets clearly line up with one of your causes. This is where you should start looking.

Reach out to early career professionals and be there for them. Help them blossom. Challenge them to dream big. Be someone they can be vulnerable with so they can share and be coached about issues & insecurities they can't share with their bosses & colleagues. Tell the stories of your failures as well as your successes so they understand no one becomes a rockstar without sometimes tumbling into the rocks. Then ask them to pay it forward in 30 years ;-)

While having a vision is important, each step to get to the vision is crucial. Be open and docile with new discoveries as we engage more and more people on the ground to navigate the course and stay steadfast on the vision but never rigid in the process, the progress. Make a lasting change, a legacy that bears fruits that last.

Consider simply restating your vision for your legacy and what was important to you. Use this, along with faith in the next generation and/or future institutions, as a guide for them to adapt and change to emerging causes you could not foresee.

I agree with David Andres Kietzman’s points above. I’ve done all three and greatly benefited; I’m currently serving on the right board that aligns with my interests (Community Parters), and throughout my life donated to heartfelt causes and even recently worked collaboratively in a giving circle. I would also suggest addition by subtraction. For me, I’ve been able to focus my best efforts on the new things by removing activities that have been great, but it’s time to move on.

Consider developing a philanthropic budget as part of your giving strategy. Both an annual budget and legacy allocation. The benefits to having a budget structure are: 1) Enabling you to adhere to your philanthropic vision. Once you start giving, you can become overwhelmed with requests and ideas and lose sight of your vision. 2) Providing you with an opportunity to tell fundraisers and well-meaning family and friends, that your budget is fully allocated this year, however you will consider the organization in future charitable planning. 3) Giving the organizations you support a resilience plan. By having a budget plan, your charitable organizations can ensure they have accurate financial projections & strong reserves.
