However, spending time at the beginning to map out the current situation holistically is an important task. Often, outside factors can have a significant impact on life inside work and achieving this balance in line with the clients values and priorities early into the coaching sessions is needed to ensure success.

Starting with the current reality can constrain thinking. By focusing on the desired future state first, executives can think creatively and perform a gap analysis to bridge the current state and the vision. This mirrors how companies formulate strategies: they define their vision before conducting a SWOT analysis. This approach fosters innovation and provides a clear roadmap for development.

Assessing reality for career planning involves a genuine recognition of all factors that may influence a client's career. This includes their personal life, overall well-being, values and aspirations, past experiences, and lessons learned. It also takes into account their strengths and interests for growth to establish a clear understanding of their starting point when planning career milestones. Beyond classical self-assessment tools such as personality and strengths assessments, 360-degree feedback, or career assessments, I particularly value the use of SWOT analyses with my clients. Start by identifying your long-term career aspirations and break them down into short- and medium-term objectives. Collaborate with your executive coach/mentor to conduct a thorough self-assessment, identifying strengths, areas for development, and potential opportunities. Establish SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals, ensuring each milestone is aligned with your overall career vision. The easiest way to Milestone Map your goals is to do as Stephen Covey says, and begin with the end in mind...in other words, focus on that end goal as your starting point, and work backwards. Consider your goal, what are the final steps you'll take to achieve this? Those last action points will be your final milestone. Now consider what will you need to do to hit that milestone, and again the steps before that. Keep working backward until you have a list of steps with associated milestones. Now starting at the end point again, understand the time it will take to fulfil each step associated with each milestone. This will give you a detailed time map for not only your key milestones, but the action steps within.
