Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs can be used to by individuals to determine their "why." An individual 's needs progress from physical (food and water), safety (security), social (belonging), self-esteem (feeling good), and self-actualization (knowing why). Therefore, the four "lower" needs must be met before an individual can contemplate the "why" in their life. Hence, real estate is discouraging for individuals who pursue it for reasons other than serving the needs of others.

Since most real estate agents are independent contractors there is a dichotomy within the profession: the corporate side and the community side. In essence the team members employed on the corporate side are providing support to the real estate agents on the community side. The corporate team creates and maintains the organizational culture. Therefore, it is important for the real estate agents to become engaged in the adoption and promotion of the culture within their respective communities.
