Here's how you can convey your enthusiasm for public speaking in an interview.

Meh. What I see from the other responses is to create some faux energy. I couldn’t disagree more. My recommendation is twofold: 1) only speak on topics you both love as well as know better than the majority of your audience; and 2) take the nervous energy we ALL have and turn it into energy in the stage. I don’t care how many speeches and graduations and sermons I’ve delivered. I also don’t care how large or small the audience is. I am terrified for the first few minutes of every talk. And every honest person I speak to is. Lol. Soooo…take that nervous energy and turn it into the real passion you have for your topic.

Sharing relatable stories of those who express something they remembered and benefitted from that was learned during something I taught or shared in a presentation is always rewarding. There have been those who were empowered to change their family health legacy because of what they learned and began to practice. That simply makes my heart happy to know I could make an impact like that.

I think the question is a little odd atually. If you have a passion for public speaking then surely being yourself and communicating naturally is the way to it. Also, take feedback as sometimes in my public speaking experience what I felt was excellentlly passionate public speaking was actually something quite distracting. The trick is to surround yourself with people you trust to be honest but not demotivationally harsh.

Convey clearly your ability to speak with conviction and confidence. A message needs to be conveyed about your grasp of the subject, no matter how complex it may be. Your body language and appearance must exude faith and ability. Describe your past experience of public speaking and the tremendous applause you got for it. Say that you have done in the past with success and shall be able to do again with greater flair and conviction.

The impact of body language on public speaking should not be underestimated. Throughout our lives, we may unintentionally pick up habits that could hinder our ability to communicate effectively. To combat this, it is advisable to record yourself after refining your presentation in order to identify and rectify any distracting mannerisms. Remember, your body language can either support or detract from your message, so be sure to maintain a strong connection with your audience through eye contact and active engagement with the entire room.

One's body language especially emphatic body gestures, maintaining eye contact are effective for emphasising and clarifying words used by the speaker. Smiling to the audience and/or adding humor to one's speech keeps the audience engaged. Talking with one's hands and particularly with palms open also keeps the conversation flowing.

Body Language is nonverbal communication, and that can be up to 60% of the message you convey. Confident body language is key, stand up straight, smile, etc. If sitting, sit upright with eye contact. Use gestures to emphasize points but not excessively. Practice posture and gestures for effectiveness in front of a mirror.

As important as what you say is how you say it. Pay attention to your posture; open up your body. When we are confident, we tend to keep our shoulders less hunched, and that's exactly what you want in an interview, to show yourself as someone secure in the space you are in. Avoid hiding your hands, such as sitting on them or putting them in your pockets. Place your hands lightly on the table or your lap and gesture when you speak. Also, avoid restless and shaking legs. Look into the eyes of the people you are speaking to, especially if there is more than one recruiter. Keep your expressions open. Remember, your body doesn't just talk; it shouts! And it is important that it conveys the right message.

In an interview, demonstrating your ability to modulate your voice can reflect the energy and passion you bring to presentations. By varying your pitch, tone, and pace, you can make your speech more engaging and dynamic. Voice tone and pace are key to engaging an interviewer or an audience. Record a series of questions you may answer in an interview and play it back. This can be painful, but very effective in finetuning the right tone and pace to speak. The same can be said for your presentation. Try and get every session recorded. It will help you know what works with the audience, what you need to adjust for an even better presentation and it gives you an audible reference point on your tone and pace.

There is appropriate voice modulation for each occasion. Voice modulation is responsible for bringing the emotion contained in the message. Therefore, adjust your variation to the environment you are being interviewed for. Know that louder volumes (without shouting or exaggeration) are associated with sensations of conviction and presence. Lower volumes are perceived as sensitive and welcoming. Speak clearly, pronouncing words correctly (work on your diction), but do not be too slow, as the sense of energy in speech is produced by rhythm. Vary from a higher pitch (cheerful, light), bringing a smile to your face, to a lower pitch (more serious and firm) when you want to convey perceptions of strength and charisma.

Your voice modulation can be used to portray your different personality while speaking. Remember that you are addressing different kinds of people and you need to wear many hats so as not to sound boring to all.. Be yourself and ensure you don't sound too dull, the longer you speak the more different you can sound so add the spice to it and ensure you deliver your message sounding like who they would want to hear.. the best versions of you.

I told a group of 30 students a story about my love of golf and how the engineering topic of aerodynamics is used to make a golf ball fly higher, faster, and longer. The speech was a hit.

Research in advance who might be interviewing you or which story best connects with the place you aim to be. We are a collection of stories, but each one connects with a different audience. The more personalized it is for your target audience, the better. And never forget: every story has a setting, a character (you), a conflict (the climax), and a lesson or reason to be told.

Seek out people and education.

Seek knowledge and, just as importantly: diversify! Communication involves other tools that can also demonstrate your interest, such as creativity, storytelling, active listening, rapport, and principles of influence. Talk about new content, show that you are up to date. Some books that can help you expand your communication repertoire are: 'Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion,' 'Promote Yourself,' and 'How to Win Friends & Influence People.' However, make it clear that while having a repertoire is valuable, oratory skills only develop with practice. So, don't forget to mention practical activities you engage in to maintain constant development.

Public speaking skills aren't just a set of wrenches in the drawer. Continuous learning in public speaking means paying attention to your audience. You can be great with one audience and weak with another because it's a different culture with its own communal rules. Whether you're a great public speaker or it fills you with dread, realize your message will only be as effective as your ability to "pass" as an honorary member of that community. So do some research, build some relationships, and listen to feedback. Not as "constructive criticism," but as guidance on what that community will respond best to. You'll develop your chameleon skills and your message will land better. Works for public speaking to interview committees too.

I believe authenticity is of utmost importance. So, I would say something like, "Early in my career, I often struggled with self-doubt, especially when presenting ideas to large groups. However, as I engaged more in public speaking, I noticed a dramatic improvement in my self-assurance. The ability to articulate thoughts clearly and engage an audience has empowered me, making me more confident in various professional settings."

Something I’ve found beneficial in public speaking is to focus on addressing your audience to impact them versus to impress them. It’s great to demonstrate your depth of knowledge, data, and statistics on a subject matter, however, reaching people through relatable and relevant experiences create more of a lasting impression and carry solid weight to your message. Injecting appropriate personal and professional experiences related to your subject matter causes your audience to connect what you’re saying to their position, area of work, and functional use. It leaves them with the opportunity to apply it in their various settings and drive any necessary change within themselves. Speaking with authenticity in this manner drives more impact.

Proving personal impact in an interview is crucial to showcase enthusiasm for public speaking as it highlights your effectiveness and the tangible benefits of your skills. It demonstrates your ability to engage, influence, and deliver results. For instance, I improved training session feedback scores by 30% through engaging presentations. The other technique that I was taught by my public speaking coach is to bounce your voice. And by bounce, I mean bounce it off the back wall of the room you’re in. If you can visualize your voice hitting that wall and you hearing it, it ensures you can be heard by all. Not shouting of course. Depth to me is key.

One thing I’ve always found helpful is to keep the key focus on ‘audience impact’. Bringing this servant leadership lens to public speaking allows the speaker an even higher sense of purpose and also creative freedom. But most importantly, the audience is rewarded because they are indeed the priority.

Breathe! Just like when you practice public speaking, good breathing technique are the essential foundation for success in an interview. Remember to take the time to regulate your breathing before you begin by doing some breathing exercises. Also, take one deep breath and a pause before opening your mouth to speak. This will help you get your voice into the right vocal register and for you to sound more confident from the first word.

Ironically, I don’t love being the centre of attention but you wouldn’t know it. Why? Because I am so driven by the mission to inspire hope, reveal possibilities and drive opportunities for my audience, it fuels the enthusiasm and it becomes contagious. In an interview, expressing the mission ignites passion and manifests as authentic enthusiasm and desire to serve…THAT seems to resonate. At that point, the mission is bigger than me so it’s easy to lean in to that, and get excited creating a shared experience with the interviewer. Bottom line tap into your excitement about the mutual mission and the audience.
