Always build a case. I see a lot of clients “asking” for things. Asking for a raise, asking for a promotion, asking. From childhood we here several times “no” for a yes. So this is what’ll happen when we ask. Instead build a case that aligns your career goals with those of the organization. Carefully construct an argument that shows: 1. What were the goals. 2. How you achieved them. 3. Show praise for your achievements (email, chat snapshots, etc) 4. Show how you’re en route to newfound goals. After this, you’ll have their attention and their interest. You just have to follow through after that.

A follow up message is really important. Your career progression and growth is that - yours. As well intentioned as your manager may be, they could get distracted and put off what the next steps are, or simply forget what you discussed - they are humans and we are forgetful at times. Sending a follow-up email provides a written record of what you discussed with them, and will also serve as a reminder of what those next steps should be
