Here's how you can conquer the fear of public speaking and confidently present as a computer engineer.

The First thing I would suggest as a person who has been working on my Public Speaking Skills as a Computer Engineering Enthusiast is to participate in events and network with professionals and likeminded people which helps us to break the fear of speaking to unknown people and enhances our ability to handle ourselves under unconventional circumstances. This can also help in connecting with new people. Also, volunteer towards Speaking Events, even considerably very small and insignificant events. I know, it's very hard to start, but with consistent efforts to put our thoughts forward in an effective way, we can improve our public speaking skills. Remember "The Worst Speech you will ever give, will be far better than the one you never give."

When you have a deep knowledge base, you naturally feel more confident discussing and explaining your topic. This knowledge stems from knowing that you are well-prepared and capable of answering questions and addressing challenges that may arise during your presentation.

My first opinion on public speaking is to conquer your nerves. Understand that everyone goes through the nervousness when it comes to stand in front of a crowd. What makes orators different is how they translate that feeling in a positive way. What I personally do is to take a few deep breaths and tell myself loud and clear that ‘Yes, I can do it’. Next thing is not to depend on a Slide deck. Consider it as a helpful tool, but not the center of attention. You should mentally prepare beforehand to deliver your message even without a presentation. In such a case, whether the projector is working or not, you will go ahead at the same pace.

I believe that ’Breaking the ice’ is critical for a creative discussion. There are multiple proven techniques that one can employ to create a rapport with the audience. Keep eye contact - with every one in the audience. I prefer to walk around, but that’s a personal choice. Empathize with the audience. If they get disconnected, take your time to repeat or ask them a question or give them a break. If you feel that your ideas are not getting through, use metaphors to explain.

Presentations are powerful tools to help express the idea. Make it clear and concise. Use minimal text and avoid reading from the slides. Always keep your words above the visuals.

It’s said 70% of human communication is non verbal. It includes how we pause, the tone and pitch of voice, the fillers. The way we look, the actions we show and the speed of the actions are all part of the conversation. Make sure we are aware of our mannerisms and cautiously manage them.

Story telling is an age old technique to engage people of all ages. But it needs to be practiced in front of a mirror or good friends. When a message is delivered through a story, the audience remembers it for a long time. Another technique is to reward the audience after asking questions. You can clap or ask everyone to clap. If you could give away some freebies, nothing better than that.

To conquer that fear, here is what I can say: 1: know the topic you are presenting on and be confident to yourself, if you don't know what you are saying, then you won't actually captivate your public. 2: prepare yourself before the presentation as many times as you can, to have some important keywords, be more confident. 3: participating in events can help you see how other people are presenting, when they are stuck, how do they manage that, etc. 4: Also, volunteering toward online or speaking events, to maybe ask some questions, share an idea, etc can help you control your stress.
