Enterprise functions like procurement, sales, stock control, credit control and accounting are segregated for specialization purposes but are integral components of business management. ERP addresses the shortcomings of silo information systems which isolated these functions due to previously inadequate software design and limited technological capabilities. An ERP relational database stores all business data for the enterprise with relationships interconnecting entities like customer, supplier, employee, stock item, sales order and invoice reflecting business concepts used as the basis to manage firms. The ERP programs' design relates to business processes which are sequences of work activities conditioned by business events and decisions.

Focus on a specific business domain area like Sales or Procurement or Finance or HR, and become an expert functionally so that you are able to communicate with business stakeholders in ERP projects. Also narrow down on one core ERP to be an expertise in whether its SAP or Oracle or INFOR or any other ERP. Also parallely get industry experience.

When using ERP jargon at the beginning of an ERP implementation project for example, any technical vocabulary must be explained and confirmed to be understood by the audience. ERP module integration can be exemplified with a supplier invoice input in Accounts Payable which automatically generates related journal entries in General Ledger. The effectiveness of ERP knowledge transfer can be noticed when employees communicate with ERP jargon in their work environment.

An ERP insight can be the relationship between ERP modules, authorized users and business processes. Specific features of several modules are used by different ERP users to perform a process. For the order-to-cash process, a salesperson inputs and invoices a customer order in Sales Order Processing with automatic posting of the invoice in Accounts Receivable and sales journal debit and credit entries in General Ledger. The storekeeper records goods issue with updated stock balances in Inventory Management and automatic cost of goods sold journal entries in GL. The credit control clerk inputs and allocates the customer payment receipt to the invoice in AR with automatic cash journal receipt postings in Cash Management and GL.

Active listening enables the understanding of the ERP client's requirements and staff feedback during ERP training, testing and support. This helps to select the best-fit ERP system and continue to improve its usefulness and usability throughout the ERP lifespan. When employees are involved in ERP implementation and continuous improvement, they remain engaged and motivated to use the ERP system effectively and efficiently.

Preparation is the key to communication to all stake holders. Know your audience and communicate effectively. Use proper channels based on what you need to communicate eg. MS Teams or face to face for meetings, emails for conveying call to action and RAIDs etc
