In my opinion, entry level engineers adventuring into the job market should research career opportunity postings in the location where they’d like to be employed. When I first entered the work force, Java opportunities in the Fox Cities (WI) were few and far between…you needed a C# background in order to find employment. Unless you live in a very large city, I think it is common to find a specific skill set in demand by geographic location. Once you have that first position, you’ll spend your entire career learning new languages, whether it be a requirement of your assignments or to keep your skills current. An engineer will learn dozens of new languages throughout his/her career.

In my opinion, it does not matter which language you start learning to program. The main goal is to learn programming. Eventually, you will find your path in this journey. Whatever language you choose to start with learn algorithms, how computers work, SQL, and some front-end. Having a somewhat understanding of the main topics then will make it easier to find your path.

From my perspective, first, think about what tasks you'll be doing most. Are you building websites, managing databases, or analysing data? Each task might need a different language. For example, if you're working with databases, SQL is a must. If you're into web development, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are key. Understanding what you need to do helps you pick the right tools for the job. Also, consider what languages are popular in your industry, as learning these can help you find a job more easily.

You don't start to working in a vacuum. Use the tools and languages that are already created for the environment. If you need mobile development - Kotlin / Dart. Systems - C/C++. If the databases - SQL / GraphQL. If lyrical songs then French, if you need to reach a large audience - English, if swear - Russian. Use languages that your computers and your team understand.

One of the most searched programmers are now: C#, VB.NET and in many cases (even if it doesn't seem) COBOL. Yes, that old language that many people don't want even to heard it's name! All financial transactions runs on COBOL.

When I need to learn a new technology or language I prefer to learn by doing it. I find something cool to do with that specific technology and I start grinding through Google, Stackoverflow, Youtube and so on to answer all the questions I have. But that's probably because that's how I got into programming. I had to 'hack' my way in so I'm used to hacking things. I also realized that when it comes to learning the depths, taking a super detailed course also happens. But in my experience having a vague understanding before the course helps making the mental connections and understanding the subject very well.

You can never have enough knowledge to future-proof your skill and career. It is an endless learning path. Technology evolves and we must keep learning and studying and do knowledge sharing. Learn deeply what is best today and learn how to learn, how to update how to adapt and how to switch from one language to another, from one platform to another, from relational database to NoSQL, etc.

I don't believe that languages may resonate with anyone. Sometimes we can't choose due to legacy systems and you just have to learn that language. Every language has its own pros and cons. Learning a new language will help you in long term in understanding system designs.

Another aspect relative to this is what is the team that you're developing with and for comfortable with from a programming language standpoint. In the past I had a software project where I wanted to use Python it was relatively new at the time but I felt much more clean than Perl, but because the team I was developing with we're not familiar with it we chose to go with perl. So I think this is a bit less about personal preference and more about what fits for the team.
