Weave storytelling into your public speaking! Craft a narrative with a relatable character facing a challenge. Use vivid details to paint a picture and build suspense. Surprise your audience with unexpected twists. Connect the story to your main point, showing its relevance to their lives. This emotional journey will hook them, making your message memorable.

It's not necessary that people pay attention to the whole of your speech. Even in storytelling people can go bored and ignore your speech. This problem can be solved by grabbing attention. You can add some hooks in your speech that force people to pay attention. But how? → You can change your voice tone, (Taking pause, suddenly speaking a bit low or higher according to your speech) → You can add a few funny or serious lines in your speech. → You should also change your position on the stage and most importantly your hand gestures. → For grabbing people's attention towards you, you can even ask a few engaging questions.

I agree and I would also say it depends on who you are as a public speaker. What’s your style? What are some of your talents that you could use to grab the rooms attention aside from getting straight into a speech? Jokes are always great if they’re lighthearted and don’t offend others. Sometimes that catches the audience off guard and if you can get a simple chuckle out of them, they’ll be excited to hear what you’ll say next. I’ve also found that starting a lecture or speech off by singing, is sure to grab attention, especially if it’s good and unexpected. Letting people know there will be prizes and incentives for listening and engaging sometimes gets people to lock in on what’s happening.

Human connection is ultimately about bringing your authentic self to the conversation. This offering of yourself to the conversation gives not only the ability for others to know you, but also the ability for commonalities to be identified, and for you to know others, through the knowledge and disclosure of your shared experiences

I use bold statements or provocative questions that challenge their common beliefs or assumptions, prompting for them to think deeply and engage with my message. 3. Last, I employ dynamic body language and a strong vocal presence, varying my tone and pace to emphasize key points and maintain their interest throughout my talk.

Relate to the audience. You need to bring stories or scenarios they relate to. When I teach economics to young school leavers I talk of buying an iphone etc. but when talking to professionals it will be on investing in assets etc. The examples you bring must be relevant. It must be connected to what matters to them at that time and in that time period. If not it can bounce off their heads.

There is a language processing area in your brain, those areas detect and decode the words, and?those areas play only that part, if you do?not try to reach other parts of the brain you cannot connect with the audience. if you are telling a?narrative with the support of dopamine (Excitement, curiosity, emotion, questions)?hormones it enables the?audience to imagine, feel, emotionally connect and go with you on the?same journey.

This is also why knowing WHO you are speaking to is so important! Ask questions about who the audience is if you don’t know, then select stories that will resonate.

My advice is to build your speech/presentation like a book or series: every chapter solves its own ?sub-story“ and adds information to the overall thread or puzzle, so your audience learns/grows until you reach the final conclusion, decision making point or takeaway. It will help to keep your audience engaged and motivated to get to the bottom of your story.

Correct voice does justice to written words. A suitable way of speaking brings out the intended meaning better. This applies to all intended expression in general. Suspense, if created through words or structure already, can be embellished by varying inflection, cadence, pause. The placement and duration of these elements can make the rendition of words more lively. It is not necessary to follow a prescribed style for a certain type of message. Any style can be adopted that is the best suited to the intent, is practical, and preserves the "me"ness of the speaker.

The best way to connect to your audience is to tell them a story about how you have overcome rejection or someone telling you “no.” I was not accepted into many law schools the first time I applied. I worked hard and re-applied and got accepted into many. I was rejected by a law firm three times before they finally gave me an offer for employment. I became a rainmaker partner at that law firm. I am now a successful aviation lawyer with a 30 year career. Don’t give up. Tell others how your disappointment and rejection later became pride and acceptance. But, it’s not all luck. It takes a plan, persistence, and patience. That’s an emotional journey that others can relate to! A disciplined drive to success!

I love telling stories and I’ve got a lot of them. I remember one of my first speaking engagements when I was in my early 20’s and talking to researchers and physicists at an International Conference. I kinda enjoyed my self and never looked back. I believe in bringing one’s personality to your speaking engagements and showing your vulnerabilities. Of course you have to know your field and garner respect , while you also entertain and tug at a few heartstrings.

As an interviewer I can say with absolute certainty this is a MUST. A couple of points: construct a speech with the END in mind… And, don’t shy away from telling the stories that you find embarrassing or vulnerable. It’s key to connection, and even possibly respect.
