Here's how you can build a successful team for your consulting project.

I’d rather concentrate the effort of an individual on the company’s success and make him/her feel a part of the company. If people are expected to perform only some particular role (and even to demonstrate proper performance), no exponential growth might be expected. Roles change all the time and the speed of changing must be driven both inside and outside. I always try to make people feel unsupervised, self responsible and expected a lot of input to the prosperity of the company or to the success of the project. Maybe that’s why I founded consulting business, not a manufacturing one.

One thing I have found helpful is forming champion teams led by mid level members of the organization. These teams are a grouping of Kaizens on one topic with weekly measurements that track to monthly P and L. We then worked this into a profit share and team leader performance reviews. Some teams lasted weeks some months. We had up to a dozen going simultaneously. The lead turn around and senior management decided the teams from input from middle management and up.

A well-oiled machine needs every part to know its job. Before you start building your consulting team, clearly define each role. What skills are essential? What responsibilities will each person have? Having these details sorted out from the start prevents confusion and ensures everyone understands their part in the project. A Consulting Team should perform like a well oiled machine which fits perfectly in it's intended role . If that is to be translated well , it should consist of well defined roles and collaborative demarcations for which we have to pick up a team of talented individuals who understand their role and perform their functions well. The above stated team should be working in a well defined team structure which fosters collaboration and accountability. It also does not hurt to have a team of interns supporting the entire stated function , as they help to ease the load off the team members and provides exposure and training to the potential candidates.

One of the best learnings from management education is to seek out different perspectives , as they provide unique solutions and solution approaches to the existing problems . Having a mix of talents coupled with better collaboration helps to build team rapport and transfer of skills between team members which helps in the development of competent professionals across the board. Also , we would require a bunch of team members who are very street smart/practically oriented to deeply collaborate with technically sound colleagues, leading to smoother functioning and better insights of the customer to be incorporated in the final solution/recommendation.

At the same time, it’s important to build on strengths and collectively compensate for weaknesses. ??♂? A tip here is to balance the mix of what I call "book-smart" resources vs. "street" smart resources. Each of these resource groups bring a unique approach and perspective to the project and too many of one group can create too much or too little structure and can adversely impact the risk profile.

I took on a role that I was not comfortable with, and it became a career. Had I remained in my prior field of work my career advancement opportunities would have been stifled.
