In the education sector, event planning is a natural part of community building. I have found that after seventeen years of planning and publicizing events — whether they be fundraisers or friend-raisers — it is essential to get everyone on the same page about goals and vision very early. Any event requires a team to plan, but also a team to help build excitement and awareness. Sharing the same message is key to setting expectations for all, so don't short change the planning stages before you begin setting dates and ordering tables!

When I started my event planning business, I made it a point to engage locally by attending chamber of commerce meetings and joining community groups. Through these connections, I was able to collaborate with local vendors and venues for events, which not only strengthened my network but also helped me gain referrals and visibility in the community.

Understand the demographic of the community and which platforms they are most likely to use. Research what other businesses in the community utilise and have success with. Don't be scared to try new things and trial new platforms to see what works. Social media, like content creation itself, is about iterating and keeping up with the trends. Sometimes, if you're brave and creative enough, it's about setting the trends. Doing things well and showing leadership may mean other local businesses come to you for advice and guidance.
