After decades of us all witnessing countless financial and personal successes from someone having made decisions that were rife with uncertainty, is hard to understand why people still need to hear, "not all variables can be controlled or predicted". Striving to avoid uncertainty would be like trying to avoid the sunrise. All decisions have a degree of uncertainty built into them. It may not be possible to eliminate or even reduce uncertainty but it is always manageable. It's manageable by one key skill we all posses. A widely underrated, often underused skill called understanding. Whether the uncertainty is in the form of a human, a product, a service or a technology understanding the nature of its origin and behavior is key.

To take a different approach, data, customer feedback and industry experts can derail a goal as much as inform it. Much depends on the amount of experience you and your teams have with the topic at hand. Example, instead of data analysis find out what people are saying. What is the culture, sector or niche is saying. And if you're relying on customer feedback you've already past the insights stage and have fallen behind in your understanding. Instead of relying on expert opinions spend time crafting your own. Answer the question, what is it that is so unique about the experience your product or service offers that people know they can only get it from you? Then, if you need help getting there, expert opinions can be extremely helpful.

This is often overlooked, take a moment and reflect on whether or not your teams should be reflecting more often. (see what I did there) When a project or program is completed there are more queued up waiting for your attention. Taking time to reflect and adjust seems like fantasy. The problem is our brains don't like to go back over things. We are all successful in what we do, our brains are good at being right. Going back over things to chat about how we could have done better or where we missed a step or fell short is painful and we resist it with every fiber in our being. But if there is one tested and proven way to improve core skills like communication, collaboration and follow through it's by reflecting and adapting.

Decision-making is ultimately a human process. While factual information is crucial, relying solely on it can overlook the nuances that only human judgment can address. Sometimes, it's beneficial to follow your gut feeling. Depending on the complexity of the situation, it's wise to approach decision-making from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. Balancing these approaches ensures a more holistic and effective decision-making process.
