I think there's no need to focus specifically on the cybersecurity field here, because the action plan for dealing with a career setback remains more or less the same. First, you need to analyze the reasons for what happened, understand your strengths and weaknesses, and identify what you could change to avoid making the same mistakes. Then, get to work: learn, take on simpler tasks, get a job as an assistant or apprentice to an experienced professional, and gain experience to be ready for more complex challenges. Over time, this will build self-confidence, close gaps in your knowledge, and develop the necessary skills.

Consider that to reach your full potential, you will likely make mistakes along the way. Even if you are the talk of X for a day and it feels like the cyber bullies will make you unemployable, there are tons of other opportunities. Many successful security professionals have discussed their most significant setbacks in podcasts, blog posts, etc. An excellent way to raise your spirits is to emulate your role models in overcoming the low points in their careers. Now is also an ideal time to work on a big project you’ve always wanted to do, such as a book or research project. A well-received contribution to the industry will get your career back on track.

?? Failure is success in progress. Of course, it's acceptable to fail. Because that is when we develop and discover our actual potential. Accept failure and learn from it. More importantly, do not hide your failures. Learn from it. Take some break and come back stronger with a vision to make it with a clear goal of success. How does the saying go? God closes a door and opens a window? Multiple times in my career I've encountered setbacks and failures that felt like I'd messed everything up. But then after time passed and I looked back I realized that without that bad event happening I wouldn't have ended up where I was afterwards. Just keep your chin up and keep moving forward one step after the other and try to do what you think is right and/or good. Down the road you'll feel differently than you do in the moment of your setback

The field of CyberSecurity is a rocketship. Controls, and TTP are always evolving. In our hyper-connected world there are many options to help update and improve the skills needed to keep up with trends and emerging technologies. First, determine what skills and capabilities are in demand in your field of expertise. Secondly, utilize free resources (with discretion ie trust but verify) such as APISec University, YouTube.com, LinkedIn premium training, Hack the box etc and Udemy. There are many many free options available to you. Lastly, Do something with this new knowledge. You can build a very inexpensive lab on your home network, setup Docker and run all of these cool applications that you've spent time learning

Time and skills requirement change. Feedback will show the areas you need to grow. Focus on the future, dont dwell on the past, that is why humans have eyes in the front of their heads...

Your network is your safety net. Your former colleagues know the quality of your work and contributions you've made to their success. Re-establish contact with former colleagues that can help advise and encourage, perhaps they may know of a new opportunity. If they are local ask if you can meet for lunch or drinks.Always be honest with them in seeking critical feedback and be prepared to listen without responding or becoming defensive. Do not take their feedback personally, this is to help you improve and reflect on initiating positive self change (We all have room to improve.) Become more active in meetups and make new friends in the field. You network of friends and colleagues are your strongest assets. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Remember that failure is part of the growth journey and does not define your professional value. Develop a growth mindset, focusing on continuous improvement and learning from your mistakes. Resilience and Cybersecurity go together like spaghetti and meatballs and in more way than one. So it would only make sense that Cybersec practitioners are also resilient. Simply put, Cybersecurity is NOT an easy job, the technical expertise and cool head needed to navigate the politics of the job is difficult to manage. Building the ability to adapt quickly, expect the unexpected and not take things personally will help any professional do well, but in Cybersecurity, this is especially important! If you’ve fallen, don’t give up, build that shell and get back into it. Add that experience into your knowledge bank, learn from it, and move on!

Having a broad network of people that you can talk to professionally not only opens you up to new opportunities but gives you people to discuss your new ideas with. Professional connections help you stay on top of the latest trends such as news or technical techniques that will benefit you greatly. As a security professional there are many opportunities to network with like-minded individuals. Organizations such as BSides, ISSACA and ISSA typically have local groups in most metropolitan areas. Additionally, meetups of local Defcon (DC) groups, hacker meetups OWASP etc. These are all excellent networking opportunities not to mention that most of these events are entertaining to the casual observer. Larger conferences such as BlackHat and Defcon in Las Vegas offers a premium networking opportunity with security executives and professionals from all over the world, seriously, one never know who they'll run into while there. Be friendly, smile and live in the moment. Here's to your networking success.

Networking is important in most outward facing careers, especially those like Cybersecurity where there is a heavy consulting element to it. Networking doesn’t always mean meet ups, dinners and forums. It also means staying in somewhat of contact with clients and other professionals you meet along the way, sharing interesting things you’ve come across and building a public persona for yourself in the space. This is very important, because if you experience a set back, these “networked industry friends and contacts” can help pull you out of it with new opportunities, career advice and even some much needed critical feedback.
