I agree with this. I am a maths educator and the more I go through the concept, the more I would have the visualisation power of the concept in my mind which will deliver the concept with atmost clarity to the students. This way students will learn with me in a great environment and will crack the concept through visualising it in their mind. Mathematics is god's language in which everything is connected and the right key concept will make your problem simplified.

Let me put the counter-argument: if you do not know your material, what are you there for as a speaker? Why should people care to listen to you when you have nothing to add to what people know? When people listen to you, they give you a part of their life. How you present the content is secondary, first ensure that you have something to speak about. As a teacher, before I teach a class, I ensure that I have gone through the topic fresh. With time our understanding and perspective change, making this a necessary step.

Keep doing it again and again till you start liking the presenter. A few points to ponder: Is the speaker putting things chronologically? Are you able to understand the logic? Are there any irritating mannerisms while presenting? Is there clarity of voice? Does the speaker deserves to be listened to?

When you speak to people, you give words to the common thought process you generate. You need to be one of them, affected by what is being discussed. This oneness with the audience needs to be generated whether through action, or words. I look for what is common to us, something that unites us, something that communicates that I have been through all that they are going through, and listening to me will alleviate their situation.

As a Physics teacher let me add that objects around us can be good visual aids too, and an activity using such objects can be more powerful than a video. A video is used when it is not possible to carry out the activity live, and a picture is useful to discuss a particular situation in the activity. Such visual aids enable the listeners to visualize things in their minds.

If I give a little time, in the beginning, to find a common ground with the audience and be one of those who have come together for the common good, it helps me. Secondly, a thorough understanding of the topic is a big handler of anxiety. I concentrate on delivering what will be of help to the listeners, and for which I have worked hard. Keeping myself on the topic keeps me calm during the presentation.

One thing I have found helpful is not to look into people's eyes. It might look threatening especially when the speaker is in his or her first attempts. I always advise my trainees to fix the people's foreheads or the hair - forehead's line. While fixing these parts, the audience will have the impression that they are being stared at their eyes. But when the speaker looks into the audience eyes, a simple eye clicking can distract him.
