During my short stint in the US, I was very fortunate to work with an American manager, who had a very deep impact in my life. He talked a lot about a concept, which today is perhaps emotional intelligence. He said, everyone carries a drum. The more one dealt with people and circumstances around them, this drum would empty out. There were very few ways that the drum could be refilled by oneself and these took years of practice. Most difficult of them was focussing only on the good or the useful traits/activities of any person, and let everything else be classified as noise, so as not to get affected. But the easiest one was to be empathetic towards others. This simple act that goes around, comes around and fills that drum much faster.

Look at the level of his EQ that he returned to India , attended the last rites of his father , returned next day and made a century against Kenya. He is crying within but he controlled his emotions and yet performed for the country . This requires practice and self talk with self control.
