There is always something to borrow or steal from these other forms. Don't turn your nose up at something just because it's unpopular or not video games. Read constantly. Have a big stack of tsundoku (unread books) next to your night stand. Consume content constantly. Watch movies, YouTube and TikTok videos. You never know where a good idea will come from and creation is just remixing multiple ideas together anyway.

From my past experience, I've discovered that true excellence in game design hinges on a wild and boundless imagination. While technical skills in coding, level design, and character creation are crucial, it's the audacity to imagine beyond the ordinary that sets exceptional developers and designers apart. Without this fearless creativity, one's work remains confined within predictable boundaries. Embracing a wild imagination opens up limitless possibilities, inspiring a sense of exploration and evolution. With this mindset, conquering the field of game development becomes not just achievable but an exhilarating journey of discovery.

While larger teams require specialists, you often start with a small game jam fellowship, giving you the chance to try everything (sword, bow, or axe!).

Once I decided to share what I had learned, other people wanted to know more what I had to say, which led to a book deal, better and more interesting jobs and a small degree of notoriety. A side effect of teaching is that you get the pleasure of "bragging" about the students who go on to do amazing achievements.

Convincing an editor that you have something worth sharing can be difficult. Writing a book is HARD! But once you have a published book that is sold online and in bookstores, you now have respectability and credibility that will take you a long way.
