I am not sure that being an expert in aviation should be a personal goal. I have started to rely on internet forums, Facebook groups, and different personalities on Twitter and YouTube that have done a great job on keeping their finger the pulse of the industry. If you are in education, you can have your students develop their subset of interest in aviation, and you guide them in the information collection and dissemination. It is another way to build community inside your own education practice. It seems to be an uphill battle to stay current on aviation news now. It seems like it needs to be built into a daily habit to seek out that information.

A large number of pilots begin their aviation journey with the belief that it is like riding a bike or driving a bus (Practical) and although this is partly true, becoming an expert aviator is about understanding what is happening, when and why. As I have moved into this part of my career. It seems like it is marked with a lot of "I do not know" The days of being 100 percent confident is over, but it has opened a new era: seeking the new perspectives. Even young students that are starting out have valuable perspectives. They still may be wrong, but if done right, it fosters a new layer of open communication. It opens the door to mentorship and networking opportunities. Being rigid and locked into narrow chains of thought will not be the way to advance aviation.
