One thing I would like to mention here is that land use planning and transportation planning are an integral part of sustainable road planning. To ensure a long term effective transport route for a city 1st step to consider and analyse the land use pattern and growth of population in each category of land use. Then estimate trip generation rate based on different land use categories and distribute the trips in a logical way i.e., Gravity Model concept is a well known approach for trip distribution. I’d say if the land use scenario goes wrong the road network scenario will also impacted by the generated trips. To identify appropriate intersection treatment need to understand the adjoining area trip pattern based on land use

Public Engagement is a tricky one. As someone who sits between the Engineering and Planning disciplines there is always a divide where some of the public can present obstacles to the "right" solution and then sometimes I know they provide wonderful opportunities and insight. PE is more than checking a box, but it also needs to have a focus. Too often "design by committee" devolves into nothing getting done, or the end result being infeasible/ineffective. For me, I want to make sure the community is heard and then given the appropriate tools and information, guided with a gentle hand. If we do our jobs right, the public can make the "right" decision themselves, improved by their insight, and then we can help follow through.

For transportation planning there is a massive wealth of data out there. Now more than ever. When I was in college it was all about physical trip surveys... now? We can develop complex traffic demand models calibrated by data scraped from GPS enabled vehicles or cell-phone data. No more do you need to physically sit an intern at an intersection for vehicle/turn counts. We have AI machine learning models that can do it better, faster, and cheaper. With most newer traffic signals using camera detection, this step not only becomes trivial but can be delivered in real time. GIS tools then let you overlay data so that everyone in your agency/team can see the complete picture and use the most accurate and up-to-data available.
