Here's how you can assess logical reasoning skills in software engineering job candidates.

For our cases, we don't use puzzle, but commons activities. Usually, we can ask to describe how to make a toast or something else. The main goal here is just to listen to the candidate and see how he deals with it. Puzzle is strongly related to culture or general information and also increase biaises.

I believe that Puzzle Solving is only effective if it is able to represent real and concrete scenarios. Too often we rely on imaginary cases only to test logical ability, but we must not forget that the "problem" arises from real situations. It is the difference between the academic approach and the work approach: apart from the ability to solve a problem, it is necessary to evaluate impact and costs as well. If a scenario is correctly presented to a candidate, based on a real use-case situation, this type of test can be particularly meaningful.

Une partie du métier de l'ingénieur logiciel consiste à identifier la cause de bugs et de les résoudre dans des systèmes existants et pour lesquels il n'a pas participé à la conception. La résolution d'énigmes constitue en effet un indicateur des aptitudes du candidat à déblayer les zones d'ombre sur une problématique dont la cause semble inconnue et donc en quelque sorte un indicateur de sa capacité à réagir pour répondre à un incident.

Code review, as well as refactoring, is the best way to maintain clean and readable code. Periodically reviewing the code is essential to keep it updated and check whether, in the meantime, new functions may have made it obsolete and inefficient. Let's also not forget the importance of comments, often underestimated, but essential for correct readability, both personal and in the event of a handover. However, having the candidate review a piece of code can be an interesting challenge, but very difficult to apply in practice.

La revue de code dans l'optique de recevoir les critiques du candidat sur du code existants permet en effet d'évaluer sa capacité en améliorer le code existant même s'il fonctionne déjà. Compétence précieuse dans un contexte où le go to market est planifié as soon as possible, il est important de s'améliorer à chaque nouvelle version du code.

As a general approach, I prefer to evaluate soft skills rather than hard skills, regardless of the type of job the candidate will be covering. Being able to be clear about how an algorithm works (and in the future, the product to which the candidate will be assigned) can be a good idea, but it is difficult to put into practice so, personally, I prefer other methods.

Une chose que je trouve également utile dans l'analyse d'algorithmes c'est la ma?trise des types de données et leur capacité en plus des possibilités d'optimisation du temps de calcul ou du nombre d'opérations. Ces détails montrent en plus l'attention que le candidat porte à la prévention d'erreurs dues aux conditions limites d'exécution d'un programme.

This method is the best to get an idea of how the candidate is able to think based on his technical knowledge (hard skill) and capability to communicate it (soft skill). I believe that development must be preceded by good planning and analysis of the surrounding environment: how many actors are present, what is the purpose of supply and the objective to be achieved. Without good planning, as well as communication, even the most experienced developers would not grow adequately.

Une chose que je trouve utile dans la programmation en bin?me c'est d'organiser des bin?mes de candidats et d'évaluer à leur insu leur capacité à s'entraider pour arriver à un résultat de qualité optimal. En équipe ce qui compte ce n'est pas d'être le plus fort individuellement mais d'être l'équipe au top. C'est une compétence rare que de pouvoir comprendre un problème et sa solution et de guider les membres de son équipe vers cette solution en tenant compte de leurs optimisations.
