Here's how you can assert yourself as a program manager in a male-dominated industry.

The first thing would be to use a different word than assert. That seems like a strong word that might push most people back on their heels. Just do the work! Earn by doing not saying. Be inclusive and empowering. Be a mentor. Give credit where due. Be fully transparent. Show your credibility overtime. Something like this is not gonna be a given, but needs to be earned

As an Engineer and Program Manager, I've mostly been surrounded by me (ratio ~ 85/15). The reasons for this skew are multifaceted and warrant another discussion. Nevertheless, I've always shown confidence in my inherent value, giving me credibility in my field. This self-assurance propelled me forward swiftly. Recognizing one's worth and contributions regardless of gender is paramount. I acknowledge that this may pose challenges for introverts, and those who might be considered atypical in their approach or background, underscoring the importance of inclusivity for all who are willing to seize opportunities. Asserting oneself in a male-dominated industry involves more than mere boldness; it requires navigating a nuanced path.

Everything a female does to build credibility and succeed in a male dominated field matters. Don’t waste energy. Be and do your very best. Know your subject backwards and forwards. Let your accomplishments speak for you. Don’t compete at their level. It’s beneath you. Don’t try to be more masculine. You are, at the very least, EQUAL, and more likely, you are better b/c we have to work twice as hard and that makes us more resilient, creative, resourceful and reliable. Be yourself. Be true to yourself. Do your best. And if the atmosphere is not conducive to your success, leave them in your wake.

All the 6 aspects listed above are relevant to both genders in the workplace I don’t understand why these points are specifically point towards a female in a male dominated team. That said, the women managers must never compete with men on deliverables and performance. Women bring the diversity to the team not by the virtue of their appearance but by their natural traits of compassion, multitasking, agility, versatility and adaptability. Women must hold strongly to the values they add to the larger vision of the project in tandem with their male colleagues

Lead by example in promoting diversity and inclusion within your team. Encourage open dialogue and create a supportive atmosphere where everyone's contributions are valued.
