Organizations need to create inclusive cultures where everyone feels valued and empowered, regardless of gender.

Too often I see women downplay their successes or say that things that matter, like job titles or degrees attained, do not matter. Regardless of being in a male-dominated industry or not, women have to acknowledge this behavior and stop communicating in this manner. Women need to be proud of the things they have accomplished. They need to stop saying things don’t matter that in actuality do. Additionally, we cannot allow others (men or women) to make us feel uncomfortable when we share wins. When others make inappropriate, rude, or dismissive comments that says significantly more about them than anything else.

Seeking feedback and using it to reflect and grow should be something individuals do regardless of their gender, identity, industry, etc. What we often forget is that different people have varied skill and comfort levels when it comes to verbal or written communication or providing feedback. The HBR article from 2023 called, “Women Get ‘Nicer’ Feedback — and It Holds Them Back” is a great resource that discusses how the feedback provided to men and women differs. Rather than relying on me as a reference, I would suggest reviewing that article and thinking about how to look for what authors refer to as “inflated” and “actionable” feedback. Then I would think about what that could mean for your growth and how to ask for actionable feedback.
