One thing first - a conversation with your line manager should never make you feel uncomfortable. A confident demeanour, good preparation, good communication (i.e. the clear formulation of wishes/goals/possibilities) and good timing create the ideal conditions for a successful conversation. For me, the best way to achieve career goals - always in line with the servant leadership mindset - is so-called intrapreneurship. Act as if it were your company. Firstly, take responsibility, show what benefits you have for the company within the framework you have set yourself and a good manager will recognise this accordingly.
