Faculties are the catalysts of this structure. So to grow in academics it is very much required to have a strong vision to groom the next generation human beings with abundance of knowledge and skill to lead a respectful life and should have the ability to reflect on this. Self goal, research, innovations are articulated and developed around this fundamental objective.

Clearly state your career goals by specifying the role/position of interest, thus showing a defined path with future steps considered. Identify particular projects or areas of interest that align with your career aspirations. Explain the broader impact you hope to achieve through those goals, providing context for your aspirations and demonstrating your commitment to contributing positively to the institution and the field. With education especially if you are applying to overseas universities and that too the top ones where the acceptance rate is very low, if you are vague it will give a wrong picture of you.

Purpose of any educational institution in a broader sense is to contribute for the development of humanity in the world. They work for development of a specific scientific or social sector ranging from Technology, Health, Social Science, Economics, Livelihood, Business etc. etc.. The Faculties should design their individual aspirations aligned to organisational objective, as such his or her personal goal can be driven through organisational purposes. Social and Scientific engagement of faculties with different stake holders can bring new knowledge and prospectives to the institution to work and add values to the lives.

There are many decision-making levers that influence institutional priorities. These levers trigger programs, actions, and funding priorities. A wide array of institutional goals present themselves as priorities at different levels of an institution. It is important to examine your goals and their alignment to those goals existing within the levels of your institutional interaction. For example, a new faculty member may examine their personal-professional goals against their departmental, divisional, and institutional goals—think vertically. It is at the intersections of your personal-professional goals and those institutional-level goals where both alignment with the institution and personal-professional growth opportunities reside.

Personally, I would strategically select goals and align it with collaborators locally to promote socio economic growth in line with the governments vision and internationally to increase exposure. Additionally, projects on an international platform makes it easier to lobby for funding and attract prospective students. Currently, research institutions are big on internationalization hence its highly imperative that the goals set and aligned must have some strong relevance with partner countries as well especially with countries that you have a strong alliance with: eg:Brics and IBSA alliance projects should be a good starting point to assist researchers in choosing goals if your are South african

It very easy to take on multiple opportunities for growth. If you are a talented professional, you will be recruited for various committees and projects to help impact the growth on your institution. The problem arises that many of these “good” opportunities can distract from your career aspirations: To prepare for the next role: 1. Have a written strategy for your next position. Include adaptations to your current role to give you experience for the next. 2. Only take on additional tasks outside your purview if they align with the next position you desire 3. As a first generation college student, I was unaware of what my career options were in higher education. Discuss your short-term and long-term goals, emphasizing your commitment to continuous professional development and your vision for contributing to the institution's mission.

Think of someone you look up to within the higher education space (that is in a position you want to eventually be in). Take a look at their career journey. Use it as guidance and inspiration for your career goals and progression. Seek out their advice. Take them to coffee. Ask them what they love and hate about their role. Learn as much about it as possible. Use this as part of your evaluation and for goal setting.

Just give your 100% not for the appraisal but for yourself! It will amaze you with results.. If your passion is what is desired from you (in appraisal) and you enjoy getting engaged and articulating your job as your identity.. this will not be a problem to even think of. Coz you will do what you enjoy and ultimately you will be contributing beyond the requirements... Reality check! Never impose your goals on your institution's goals! It should always be mutual interest not one sided! It works only if it's win win ?? ??
