Data monitoring and analysis is crucial for timely identification of engineering issues. There are multiple monitoring data/tools. You should have skill to review all parameters like progress, deliverable count,manhours , commodity analysis, procurement status etc in conjunction to diagnose. Management of change is also major reason.

I have experienced where the root cause and dimensional control data were used in conjunction with finite element analysis to justify accetping out of API Tank ovality tolerance requirements. This required tenacity to hold to the agreed action plan in an hostile environment where there was pressure to reconstruct new tanks at significant cost due to perception and schedule constraints. It took conviction, going with gut feel and trusting experience, and engaging SMEs to justify the mininum repairs necessary for the least cost and least schedule solution to repair the tanks rather than replace and accept the tolerance deviation by following a well thought through action plan in a structured logical sequence, for the best project outcome.
