Sometimes a trap we can fall into is mainly seeking feedback from our direct manager and the team we work immediately with. The role we play as leaders should extend significantly beyond this group - both within our organisation and across our industry. I have found it powerful and beneficial to seek feedback from outside my team (multiple levels up through an organisation and from other business units) and from outside my organisation (seeking mentors, collaborators and actively seeking feedback from clients). There are so many people we can learn from if we are willing to listen, not take feedback personally and to learn and apply advice.

All great points. Here is my twist: Whenever I was expecting formal feedback, I did some pre-work. Before I got the feedback, I would create a list of what I thought folks would say. Then I would compare the two. Initially, I was way off on the match. Gradually I got better to a stage where there were fewer and fewer shocks/surprises. I believe the single most important skill for a leader to develop, is self awareness. Feedback (specially anonymous) is the greatest gift in that direction. Dont rationalize gaps. Instead, burrow into your traits that could do with a tweak. Finally, with your team, not even in countenence should you try to palliate the reality of their feedback. Stay Authentic even if that means imperfect.

Often when working with students, I hear stories of student struggle, family-related issues, roommate conflict, and financial concerns. Everything from family accepting their child for who they are, abuse, and trauma. That's the unfortunate reality of working with collegiate students, the variety of experiences that one brings to the team.
