Gather feedback, make data-driven adjustments ensuring continuous alignment. Strategically select/develop coaching staff embodying skills/mindsets to cultivate in participants. Their ability to build trust, give feedback, and model behaviors is key. Achieve alignment by tying every element back to defined goals.

Coaching can support strategic planning by clearly identifying the goals and objectives of an organisation and ensuring everyone knows about them. It is important to regularly measure progress to identify if the coaching is actually helping participants reach their targets. Encourage leaders, participants and other stakeholders to share insights and best practices, communication is the key to getting results. Also track how people are doing after going through the program. Are they learning the skills they need to succeed? Or any adjustment needs to be made in the program. By staying on target and making adjustments if required the coaching program can become a powerful tool that can empower the organisation to reach its full potential.

In my experience working with executive teams, we start with the organisation’s strategic goals before asking the question - ‘in order to achieve these goals, how do our people need to develop if at all?’ It maybe that one group of people need to develop new skills, or that the entire culture needs to shift. Until we understand that, we can’t decide what developmental requirements the organisation has. Leadership coaching is just one tool and is particularly useful for supporting leaders carrying a lot of the weight of change, or helping leaders get more from their teams. If cultural change is required then I believe that coaching needs to start from the top as it’s the executive team that are unconsciously co-creating the culture.

Strategic decisions are guided by personal needs, team and org needs and what you need to then deliver as a leader. Bringing these inputs to the coaching goals conversation will allow an aligning with the coach of how they may support you through the year.

Rather than a needs assessment I would encourage a deep-dive on strengths and values, these are the energy source of your business and leaders, the more you can target development towards empowering leaders to optimise these, rather than trying to fix themselves, the more successful your development will be.

For assessing needs: In addition to a needs assessment, introduce a "reverse mentoring" program. Pair senior executives with younger employees to exchange knowledge on topics like new technologies or changing consumer behaviors. Coaching works well when the goals are defined and clear both for the coach and coachee. And to get better outcomes, another critical factor if that these goals are aligned to the overall strategy. The more the alignment, the easier it is to further action and achieve the desired strategic goals. Another key is to keep re-visiting these goals during the journey, to ensure any changes in business landscape can be incorporated in the coaching as well.
