Short and sometimes painful: If you don't know the goal, you will get lost in the technical possibilities. Only with a clearly defined goal will you be able to make decisions about which tools you can use to work on which topic.

Technology is constantly changing. If we stop learning, it will cost us money. Because the changes in the various software are often about saving time. And one day you wonder why colleagues can worship so cheaply. Besides, we love animations because they get things moving, don't we? So we shouldn't exclude ourselves from it.

The portfolio is important, but in my opinion a few examples that clearly reflect the style are enough. Too much overwhelms viewers and especially if you can work in different styles, it gets confusing. Better short and concise than verbose.

Portfolios in many cases can be make or break for candidates and are crucial to get right. Be sure to update them regularly after each project, save multiple versions based on what the role asks for(an acting reel and body mechanics reel for example), and to have it avaliable at multiple places and easy to view (website, vimeo, and YouTube, etc). What order to put your work in is another task. Starting with your strongest piece in many ways is the best move. It acts as a hook for the recruiter who hopefully will be intrigued to see what else you have done. On a similiar note, your second strongest piece should be last. That way you end on a strong note. Make sure you are clear in what you did and have you contact info avaliable at the end.

If by any chance you are in a place where there are no networking events, you can create one yourself. I did this in my country, and now we have a large community full of artists and companies in games and animation that help each other find opportunities. P.S.: If you're shy, find or create an online networking space and chat online. But in the end, person-to-person contact prevails. So, sometimes one has to make an effort, even though it might be hard. We are all shy like you :) and we will understand you.

Feedback is one of the most powerful tools we have for growth and is important to get right. Find spheres where you can post your work. You can't utilize feedback if you recieve none. There's tons of animation communities working on supporting on another and are amazing spaces to recieve comments. Be polite and don't take comments personally. It's easy as artists to get attached to what you have spent so much time on. Take a step back and remember your work isnt your entire identity. The people leaving comments have the same goal or helping the piece be the best it can possibly be. Give back and help the community which helped you. Participate in other critiques as well. It trains you eye in addition to helping the postee.

Without critical reflection on our own work or working methods, we will not improve. Not that we should be ashamed of our old work, but the next one should always be better than the one before, right?

When ending a project/animation, you should always do a post mortem (even briefly!) To see what you improved on and what needs improving. If you find that multiple pieces of yours have the same weak point, make that weakness an integral part of your next piece. Critiques are a vital way to reflect on your pieces on also get fresh eyes on it. They will have advice or comments that you wouldn't have considered because they haven't seen how you got to the end result and can see underlying problems that you can't at this point. Re-evaluate pipelines and see where you ran into issues or what steps lasted longer than you think they should. Look into ways to cut down on that time through plugins or documented methods freely avaliable.
