Here's how you can align evaluations of digital learning with organizational goals and objectives.

One of the strategies I’ve found useful is to keep it simple. What are the key learning outcomes you would want your team to walk away with? Start there and work your way backwards. And whatever you do - include all 3: knowledge, skill, and application opportunities in the assessments. Knowledge assessments can include quizzes on facts, process steps, critical thinking actions without the ability to call upon AI assistance. Skills assessments can involve scenario based role-playing. Where you get to see someone put knowledge into action. And application assessments can involve a combination of the two above, with SME’s experiencing the test takers apply their knowledge, skills, and abilities to achieve a predetermined outcome.

Begin with an end in mind. The beauty about strategic planning and cascading the theme that the entire organization needs to work on for the year is that all plans and ways of working arrive at the said common, shared, end goal. All roads lead there. Thus, from the project analysis to the evaluation part, the learner progress, completion plans/rates and learning outcomes should promote and reflect the organization’s objectives.

While defining goals to align with current business needs is essential, anticipating future shifts can be a strategic advantage. For example, instead of focusing solely on today’s skill gaps, organizations can design flexible learning frameworks that adjust to emerging trends. This forward-thinking approach not only meets immediate demands but also prepares the workforce to quickly adapt, ensuring long-term competitive advantage in a rapidly evolving market.

Gathering feedback is important, but are we asking the right questions? Instead of just measuring content satisfaction, we could ask how the learning experience applies to real-world use. For instance, in an AI training program, feedback could focus on whether participants feel confident applying AI tools to automate processes or analyze data. By linking feedback to how effectively employees can implement AI strategies, we ensure that learning drives long-term innovation and productivity.
