Here's how you can acquire new skills in higher education while working full-time.

Combining online learning with some of you other interests in your chosen language is a great way to improve comprehension and fluency. Enjoy gardening? Find a podcast or FB group in that language. Into football? Pick a team and follow articles and reports about them. It stops being a chore and starts being a pleasure!

I make a structured plan to allocate dedicated time for studying, ensuring a balance between work, education, and personal life. Leveraging technology, I use apps and tools for efficient learning and staying organized. Additionally, I connect with mentors and join professional networks to gain insights and support. Continuous self-assessment and setting realistic goals help me stay motivated and track my progress.

One of the most useful opportunities for online learning for me was through modules on Coursera, FEMA, and the WHO. I've learned a lot through courses and content outside of my specialty and it has helped me to apply this content in my field.

Working in higher education often provides benefits such as paying for weekend classes or professional development (check with your HR department)—whether through direct payments for external classes or tuition remission at the institution. Sometimes, you might have to wait to see if there are enough "paying customers" to register, but it can be a great opportunity to join an open training session close to its start.

One tactic that I use for time management includes a pie chart that breaks down how many hours (an average) per week I spend doing a certain task (i.e. sleep, work, laundry, food, etc.). If I can find how many hours I have in my free time (fT), then I can figure out: can I use that time to study or learn about a new subject matter of interest or learn about an extending matter of interest.

Every academician must associate with relevant academic societies. If one is from the engineering field, they may join a society appropriate to their field, such as IEEE for electronics, electrical, and computer sciences and allied disciplines. Those professional societies deliver courses and workshops for teachers, professors, and researchers. During semester breaks, one can attend relevant workshops/courses. One can also attend weekly online/offline courses, if applicable.

Podcasts and videos are convenient for learning on-the-go. They can provide insights from industry professionals and educators, offering practical advice and diverse perspectives.
