HR is one domain that keeps on evolving, be it the introduction of new technology, the situation of a pandemic or simply the urge to try something new, this domain has always evolved. Which is what makes continuously learning essential and all the more important.

To stay updated with the latest HR trends and practices, I subscribed to leading HR blogs and journals, attended webinars, and completed online courses on platforms like Coursera and LinkedIn Learning. This habit of continuous learning not only kept my knowledge current but also helped me gain new insights and ideas to apply in my work.

To acquire in-demand HR skills, take courses in data analytics, HR technology, and diversity and inclusion. Obtain certifications like SHRM-CP or PHR, gain practical experience through internships, and network with HR professionals. Stay updated with the latest trends and best practices through industry publications and events.

Along with the domain expertise of using HR software, HR professionals should also gain exposure to Applicant Tracking Software, also known as ATS. The knowledge of using talent management software helps in incredibly performing human resource hiring and recruitment functions. A strong command of technology is essential for Human Resources professionals. While you do not need to be an IT or data expert, being aware of and skilled in the use of the array of tools and systems available will help you work more effectively and efficiently.

I pursued a Master’s degree in Human Resource Management while working full-time. Balancing work and study was challenging, but it provided me with a strong theoretical foundation that I could apply immediately to my job. For instance, a course on labor relations helped me navigate a complex dispute at work more effectively. Additionally, obtaining my SHRM-CP certification was a milestone. The preparation for the exam deepened my understanding of strategic HR management and legal compliance, which proved invaluable when advising on corporate restructuring later in my career.

Attending conferences, joining online forums, and participating in HR discussion groups allowed me to build a robust network of HR professionals. Networking has been crucial in my HR journey. I attended a local SHRM chapter meeting early in my career and met several experienced HR professionals. One of them became a mentor, providing guidance and opening doors to new opportunities. Moreover, LinkedIn has been a powerful tool for expanding my network. I joined various HR groups where I could ask questions, share insights, and learn from others' experiences. This network proved particularly beneficial when I was seeking advice on implementing a new performance management system; the insights and recommendations I received helped me tailor a solution that fit our organizational culture.

Be hands-on if there's an opportunity, and make sure of the three things below: 1. Working on projects that involve various HR tasks like hiring, managing employees, or performance reviews helps you build a wider range of skills. 2. Tough projects often have tricky problems to solve, which can boost your creativity and problem-solving skills when you tackle them. 3. Trying out different HR projects can really help you advance in your career.

There's no substitute for hands-on experience when it comes to building HR skills. If you're just starting out, look for internships or volunteer roles to get some practical knowledge under your belt. If you're already working in HR, seek out projects that push your boundaries and expose you to different facets of the field. This might mean leading a new initiative or partnering with a seasoned colleague on a complex issue. Real-world experience is crucial for grasping the subtleties of HR and honing your problem-solving abilities.

Starting as an HR intern, I had the chance to rotate through different functions such as recruitment, employee relations, and benefits administration. This hands-on experience was instrumental in understanding the intricacies of each area. One notable experience was leading a recruitment drive for a new business unit. It was my first major project, and managing it from start to finish taught me invaluable lessons about candidate sourcing, interviewing, and onboarding. The project’s success led to a permanent role where I could continue to apply and refine these skills.

My best improvement practice is to surround myself with operations managers, commercial managers or commercial consultants, within human resources you must have a great capacity for persuasion and negotiation, these skills are better received when it is with real practice.

Embracing technology (or at least be tech-curious) is a must for HR professionals today. Exploring or using new tools that improve the employee experience can make a difference in helping our organizations grow and being (more) successfull. A big challenge I see is keeping the human touch while using tech solutions. Also it's not always easy to stay up-to-date with all new technology :)

Technology has transformed my approach to HR. Initially, I was intimidated by the complexity of HR Information Systems (HRIS), but I decided to take an online course on Workday, a leading HRIS platform. Through this, I gained proficiency in using the system for managing employee data and payroll processes. A particularly impactful experience was implementing an HR analytics tool in our department. I learned how to extract and interpret data to identify trends in employee turnover, which enabled us to develop targeted retention strategies. This project highlighted the importance of embracing technology to enhance HR effectiveness.

Technology is the most crucial for any industry. Everyone in whatever capacity s/he performing in the organization can't survive without optimum utilization of the technology. Hence if you want to excel in your professional or personal the most pivotal is embrace technology else you are a dead wood!

Soft skills have always been a focus for me. Early in my career, I struggled with public speaking and presenting to senior management. To overcome this, I joined a local Toastmasters club, which significantly improved my communication skills. One memorable experience involved mediating a conflict between two high-performing team members. By applying active listening and conflict resolution techniques, I facilitated a productive dialogue that led to a resolution and improved team dynamics. This experience reinforced the value of mastering soft skills in HR roles.

Siempre pregoné el desarrollo de las habilidades blandas, ya que con ellas he podido abrir nuevos espacios de comunicación, logrando conciliar diferentes posiciones en el ámbito laboral, lo que ha allanado el camino al equipo para conseguir los objetivos organizacionales. Además considero que la empatía es una habilidad necesaria y fundamental de la que no podemos prescindir como socios estratégicos de recursos humanos, ya que incide directamente en el bienestar y clima de la organización.

As a Manager & a leader you should practice not be bias to anyone, in any scenario you have to study the problem but not to concern who has involved. By identifying the issue, have to solve the problem without bias. It will give a clear idea to rest of the team, why they have to be very cateful while they perform their job, no matter who does, but the concern will be what the problem & accordingly will have to face the repurcussion/ punishment.

Todays Job market , HR professional shall be influencers and persuaders as they are more of business partners and they shall be able to participate and contribute to the strategic visionary of the corporate organizations.

Beyond the core skills, gaining a global perspective and legal knowledge has been critical in my role. I took a course on international HR management, which equipped me with the tools to handle expatriate assignments and understand cultural differences in global teams. A significant experience was when I had to navigate the complexities of a new data protection regulation in our multi-national company. Staying updated with legal changes and understanding their implications allowed me to lead the compliance efforts effectively, ensuring our policies and practices were aligned with the new regulations.

My opinion states a HR person should have a personality that draws employees to like them. Don’t be rigid and start toting company policy about this and that. Policy is important, but policy won’t help a company produce more widgets.
