Here's how you can achieve consistent messaging across products by collaborating with UX writers.

UX writing is not marketing. One critical mistake small companies make is asking for messaging that “sells” users on the value of their products. If the text is in the UI, it means the user is already in the product. They don’t need to be sold on trying the product, they need to be shown how to use it. If that experience is good, they will come back. This all translates into a goal of improving the UX at every level: per interaction, per screen, per flow. At certain points, messaging about the business will enhance the UX. But if it distracts, always map to the goal of improving UX. That is what will actually make users want to come back.

Too often we focus on what the company wants to be perceived as or what values the company wants to be known for. But this strategy doesn't always work. Make sure to understand your customers, their situations and their struggles. When you know those details (And I don't mean where they come from or what device they use...) you can align them with the company goals. UX writers can translate the combination into messaging that speaks to your customers and addresses their needs.

Besides representing core values, your digital product messaging can also be aligned with your business goals. For example, if you want to reduce the bounce rate of a specific step, flow or process, you can define this as a goal or guideline for UX Writers.

Include your ux writers in the exploration process. Show them what you found out about your users, so they can get a better idea of your messaging goals.

Instead of just sharing insights, you could also have a UX writer be a silent listener when you're doing user research/testing sessions. UX writers can directly observe how existing messaging might cause friction or isn't aligned with custmer interests. This way they get first-hand information and you can focus on other topics during your sessions.

Content design (UX writing) adds incremental value. The most sophisticated solutions are integrated, making the product itself feel easy to use, like the user doesn’t need to read anything to understand it. Use qualitative methods (user interviews, usability studies, heuristic evaluations) to measure the overall quality of your product. It boils down to asking users if they find it easy and enjoyable to get through a flow. Simple metrics alone will not give you a complete answer.
