One of the key principle that I have used throughout my professional life is, performance feedback is not an event, it is a continuous process. I would always recommend, have monthly performance review and provide constructive feedback and if need direction so that at the the time of evaluation, it becomes easy for both leader and employee to be on a same page.

As much as we would hope that our employer actually keeps track of all of our good performance throughout the year, quarter, or month, it’s not always the case that it happens. People are people, and people fall short, get busy, and often forget if they’re not reminded. That being the case, I would encourage every employee to be proactive in capturing and keeping track of all of their own wins and successes. This might be through jotting down positive customer feedback, screenshots of emails where team has praised you, or documenting any other examples of how the work you have done has made a positive difference. These records can be excellent confidence boosters for yourself, and also help prove your case for deserving promotion.

After discussing past performance and current standing, shift the focus to the future. Work with your evaluator to establish a plan for your continued professional development. This might include training opportunities, mentorship, or stretch assignments that can help you grow. Agree on clear expectations and timelines for any objectives set during the meeting.
