Here's how you can ace behavioral interview questions.

Behavioral questions are always tricky. One can never be prepared with "one ideal answer". This is more so because the expectations may differ from role to level. However, one recommendation I always make to everyone asking this question is "Be yourself!". You might get the job by answering exactly what the interviewer wants to hear but if that does not align with your belief system, you may eventually start despising the job. Having said that, based on the nature of the role, traits like patience, integrity, and, and grit are some of the commonly looked for qualities that one must try to showcase with the examples they share.

Interviewers want to hear and understand a story. Practice one's art of storytelling through the STAR method; and provide an answer to the question while also providing an example of how you previously learned or used that skill or knowledge. More generally speaking, for residence life, I tend to think of stories regarding on-call situations; and reflect on which ones went well and which ones that I would improve upon.

It is important to read the room, what I mean by that is to observe your interviewers. What are their personalities like? how do they interact with each other? What are their reactions or responses to what you have said so far during the interview process? These factors along with company research can give you a general idea of their team dynamics and culture. Reflecting on your experiences helps you identify how you have approached problems or what you would have done differently. The story you share is not what is priority, it is your action or response that is important. They want to see how you have successfully handled or redeemed a situation. They want to know that you can fit in with their team.

Repeated practice of answers in your voice, either alone or with a mock interviewer, helps you get better confidence, assurance, and effectiveness in the delivery of such answers. You can practice with a friend or family member asking you common behavioural questions and responding out loud to each of them as you would in an actual interview. Having someone else ask you the questions will simulate an actual interview. Record yourself if possible and review areas that need improvement. Is no one available? Stand or sit in front of a mirror and practice verbalising your responses to behavioural questions out loud. Keep your eyes on your reflection, pay attention to your body language and facial expressions, and listen to your tone of voice.

Genuine stories, even ones that don't portray you perfectly, are better than fabricated ones and allow you to showcase your authentic self. Stick to actual situations you have personally encountered. Avoid the temptation to exaggerate or make up stories, as this comes across as disingenuous. If you don't have an ideal example, explain your thought process for how you would handle a similar scenario. Make sure you focus on your learnings.?In addition to the situation itself, share authentic insights about what you learned, how you grew from the experience, and how you would approach it differently now. This self-awareness demonstrates genuine reflection.

Don't be afraid to bring a journal or notebook with you. Jot down some key points you want to make, have follow-up questions ready to go, and jot down the answers; this shows many behavioral skills that aren't talked about, such as organization, punctuality, key listening/note-taking skills, and others.

The key preparation and practice delivering your stories naturally and conversationally. Solid examples allowing you to provide truthful, unrehearsed-sounding responses will help you excel at behavioural interview. 1) Recounting small, specific details like people's names, dates, dialogue etc. makes your examples more believable and less like canned. 2) Having a variety of relevant examples prevents your answers from sounding overly rehearsed. 3) Don't just launch into your story. Start with a brief, casual statement reiterating the question asked, making it sound like a natural, regular conversation. 4) Sharing authentic insights about what you learned or would do differently demonstrates genuine reflection beyond just reciting facts.
