How can you create a culture of continuous learning within your team?

Assess your team's willingness to learn. You need to really want to upskill in AI. Identify the people that are ready to take the next step. Others will follow. Assess your teams AI footprint.

Delving into fostering continuous learning, and creating a culture within your team involves promoting curiosity, providing accessible learning resources, encouraging knowledge-sharing forums, and recognizing and rewarding learning achievements. Regularly assess and adapt learning initiatives for sustained growth.

A great way to assess the team's need is to promote internal hackathons/ ideathons which can mimic an organisation's actual AI based business requirement. It'll help the team to understand where they need a skill upgrade to solve a real world problem. Also it'll help the members to identify their interests in terms of learning goals, and promote cross - training organically.

Last month I presented the idea of Clinical Informatics Curriculum to our informatics team and an audience of our business partners and other stakeholders. Every team should build their curriculum. The word curriculum does not have to bear the traditional educational meaning. It can be an array of fun acitivties, away days, improvised meetings in the work place food court. The motivation and the feeling that the team is working to acheive some goals in a collective spirit are essential for continuous learning.

Be deliberate in including learning objectives as part of the team OKRs. Aside from encouraging the team, it also empowers them to allocate the necessary resources to achieve the learning goals (specifically and especially related to time/bandwidth).

In AI and emerging fields more than in any other, access to diverse resources and the encouragement of personal experimentation are crucial. These constantly evolving fields need to be continuously explored. The two key words here are self-initiative and guided exploration. In my startup, for example, we have integrated a weekly challenge to create GPTs. Each employee is invited to take 2h out of his schedule to create GPT with the help of our prompt engineer. This encourages innovation and the practical application of AI knowledge, while stengthening team spirit and creative problem solving. Never forget, AI will above all be an acculturation challenge for companies.

To cultivate a continuous learning culture, it's necessary to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real world application. Encourage people to undertake mini projects or case studies that apply AI concepts to actual business problems or societal challenges. Hosting regular innovation labs where people can present their projects and receive constructive feedback fosters a supportive learning environment. This practice not only enhances skills but also boosts confidence and showcases the transformative power of AI in solving real issues. By making learning directly relevant and impactful, you not only educate but also inspire people to envision and shape the future with AI.

To foster continuous learning, we organize regular workshops that focus on emerging AI technologies and methodologies. These sessions not only broaden our team's knowledge base but also act as a space for collaborative problem-solving. We've established platforms like internal wikis and discussion groups where team members can share insights and breakthroughs, turning individual learning into a collective resource.

Create a collaborative environment where team members can learn from each other. Encourage the sharing of knowledge and experiences, perhaps through regular 'show-and-tell' sessions where team members present something new they've learned.

Let's face it, continuous learning and improvement is what has guided most into the AI field early. I have found that within this industry, simply empowering and supporting the teams to learn is all they need. Consider implementing: 1. Provide clear expectations and guidelines around, and then encourage, conference attendance. 2. Invest in one of the collaborative learning platforms that allows for creating and sharing content. 3. Expand the scope of attendance to large project milestones to encourage cross-project collaboration. 4. Create internal innovation challenges where teams work on problems outside their usual scope. This encourages learning from peers with different skill sets and fosters creative problem-solving.

Recognizing and rewarding learning in an AI team can be as simple yet impactful as celebrating a team member's newly earned certification during a team meeting, or as elaborate as hosting a hackathon with prizes for innovative problem-solving. These gestures validate efforts and encourage a culture where learning is not just an activity, but a valued part of the team's ethos.

Recognition and Rewards are important but it should not be frequent. Like it shouldn't be that easy to get and it should stand apart. If you focus too much on recognition and reward candidates will start taking business problems less seriously and keep on doing trainings, certifications, write vlogs, case studies and all sorts of LinkedIn flex. They'll start living in a La La Land where real problems are just like games at an easy level where losing is hard. Also, if something is hard earned then definitely that will have more impact on an individual's development. Taking analogy, imagine the happiness you got by solving a difficult problem after hrs of practice than getting 100s of easy problems right investing the same time.

Feedback and Reflection: Establish a feedback loop where team members regularly share their learning experiences and reflect on how these insights can be applied in their work. This not only reinforces learning but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement. Recognize and Reward Learning: Acknowledge and celebrate individual and team achievements in learning. This recognition can take various forms, such as verbal praise, certificates, or tangible rewards. Make learning accomplishments visible and valued.

Be intentional. Clearly connecting the dots on why we would need or want to learn the new information is my go to first step to establish for myself as the leader and then for my team. To build a growth mindset I need to experience that it is important, fun, and rewarding to learn. If I can do that for myself first, I’m not only leading by example but with intention of inviting others on the journey that I’m already going on.

Don't be scared to try new things, even if they're tricky. See mistakes as stepping stones, not stumbles. Ask questions like you're collecting magic beans, and share your discoveries like high fives. Make learning fun, like playing games with friends. We're all newbies on this adventure, so let's keep exploring and growing together.

It’s important to reinforce that all (bold, underline, exclamation point, all) of us are continually learning. When you’re living at the bleeding edge, you’re always going to be learning new things - it comes with the territory. Create the psychological safety needed for people to admit where they can learn more, where they’re struggling, and make it easy for people to proclaim “I want to learn that too!” True learning is difficult but a growth mindset flourishes in an environment where you’re free to struggle, say you’re struggling, and get the resources to overcome.

Offer a range of learning resources, including online courses, webinars, workshops, and conferences. Ensure that these resources cover various aspects of AI and related fields.

Embrace Mistakes as Learning Opportunities: Create an atmosphere where making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process. Encourage team members to analyze and learn from their mistakes rather than fearing them. Support Personal Development Plans: Collaborate with each team member to establish personalized development plans. These plans should align with their career goals, ensuring learning opportunities are tailored to individual aspirations.

When working with client companies, a strong recommendation I always make is to set up an internal AI Council, comprised of employees from all strata of the organisation. An AI Council is a team which meets regularly (weekly or fortnightly) to compare and assess their respective notes about developments in AI technology and how they may affect their business, processes and people. The Council can and should consist of members from all levels of the company, not just execs and managers. The most meaningful prerequisite for membership is a passion for AI. The AI Council is an excellent way to promote internally driven, continuous learning about AI, in ways that are contextually relevant to the company its members work and care for.

Start each project with clarity and a well-defined plan helps prevent scope creep and keeps distractions at bay. Rediscover the joy in your AI work, and reignite your passion.

Have the team members join events and conferences focusing on AI as well as other relevant topics. After joining these events, have each member research and deep dive on a topic they learned and then share the learnings internally with the team through brown-bag sessions.
