Preparation, preparation, preparation. If your power goes out, be sure to have your laptop with enough juice (+ backups), your phone ready to tether data and your setup ready to go. There are things that are out of our control, like your phone exploding out of nowhere (been there, done that), but for the most part you are in control of the situation.

From the interviewer’s perspective, I’ve experienced several candidates face technical issues: Internet lagging, camera & shared screen not working, Zoom disconnections. There are times when a candidate prepares devices to be optimal and some tech glitch still occurs. An interviewer interested in learning more about you will likely not hold this against you, rather work with you so you can continue on with your candidacy. Supports the candidate experience. I tend to observe the candidate’s composure when such a hiccup occurs. Are they frustrated? Signaling a desire to quit this? Have they thought of an alternative? A composed interviewer will support the candidate going through this; is the candidate maintaining positive energy?

I'm not sure why candidates are so scared to just be open and honest about having tech issues. It actually happened to me a couple of years ago, where I was taking a call on a coffee shop, and in the middle of the interview, a live band started playing, there wasn't really any place nearby where I could sit in silence and for whatever reason I didn't ask for the meeting to be rescheduled. That mistake cost me 10's of thousands.
