Empowering a mid-level manager to excel in coaching with executives: How can you assert yourself effectively?

Imagine you're a rising star, tasked with coaching the big leagues. It's intimidating, but you've got this. The key? Establishing street cred. Dive deep into the company's challenges, until you can discuss them like a seasoned pro. When you're in the room with the top brass, share your insights with conviction. Back up your ideas with hard facts and a dose of empathy. Show them you understand their world, but don't be afraid to bring your own expertise to the table. Speak with authority, listen with purpose, and watch as the executives start to lean in. Because when you balance confidence with respect, you'll find yourself not just coaching, but truly collaborating with the powers that be.

What truly builds credibility is creating an invitation to engage. Before sharing your ideas, ask for an invitation to provide input or thoughts. They may not be ready for the input. This creates a connection and shows respect for the leaders, making your contributions more impactful.

It is important to convey strong business knowledge and an understanding of the business and their challenges. Yet it is also important to "hold" why they want to work with you, if its related to your business acumen etc, be great at that, if it's related to your capacity to work deeply inter- or intrapersonally be great at that, if its related to behavioural change have some compelling approaches. The coaching happens in the context of the business and its challenges and may take many different forms. Be confident in yours and, it may take time to build your portfolio of coaching clients which also builds credibility.

I've found that while it’s beneficial to grasp the dynamics of the C-suite in coaching, it's equally important not to become too entangled in the minutiae. In my experience, junior coaches can sometimes focus too much on the operational details, losing sight of the broader leadership dynamics. Try to steer clear of the nuts and bolts unless the client specifically asks for this focus. This approach helps maintain strategic impact, ensuring it promotes broader leadership development rather than devolving into mere problem-solving.

Encourage open and effective communication among team members. Emphasize the importance of active listening, constructive feedback, and clear and concise communication. Create an environment where people feel comfortable expressing their ideas, concerns, and suggestions. Effective communication helps prevent misunderstandings, resolves conflicts, and enhances teamwork.
